BL 28-40 air adjustment slide on blower
« on: October 19, 2014, 08:14:40 PM »

Well, I finally got my new 28-40 hooked up and am really loving the way my home feels.  I am wondering if perhaps Slim or some of you experienced gents can tell me where the best place for the blower adjustment to be.  Does this in anyway affect the efficiency or burn less/more wood if not adjusted properly.

Thanks guys,

Cando

Congrats on getting it running Cando. I just fired mine up today and I have it probably 3/4 open. I am not sure if it affects efficiency or not but it does recover quicker opened 3/4 to full open.  I am interested in others thoughts on this though.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say with very well seasoned wood you could close the slide down and still get plenty of heat, this would also hold true if you weren't needing the full BTU output of the stove, on less seasoned wood or high loads open the slider up more.

Mlappin is right, you can close it down a bit for less load and let her rip as the load increases.

How do you guys feel about the burn? is it cleaner than expected for a conventional stove?do you have another conventional in your area to compare it to?

I've been running new BL the last three weeks with the blower draft door half open, day temps been in the 50's & some days 60's, I'll more likely open it up fully when day temps get into the 20's.

Slimjim, I would have to say this BL smokes a whole lot less than my old Aqua-Therm, the smoke from the BL smell like smoke, not musty old creosote that I got used to for 14 years, really holds the water temp while idling for hours.

I'm still getting used to where the BL likes to run.  Due to the warmer air temps lately (40s at night and 60ish during day), I had the water temp backed off to 170.  I recently bumped the water temp to 185 and increased the differential to 10 (was set at factory default).  This seems to really help the stove burn cleaner and I notice less creosote buildup in the stove.  I think the larger differential allows the stove to really fire up for a while and burn off much more of the buildup.

I do have to say that I am impressed at how this old girl pumps out the heat.  My home is ~3000 ft^2 and another 2000 for the basement.  We have had a few nights dip into the 30s and the stove just seems to idle.  We'll see if I'm singing the same tune when the temp drops into the single digits.

So far, I'm very pleased with this unit.

It does help to lessen the creosote build up when the water is set 185+ during these milder days.

I would love to see a video clip of the BL smokestack at startup, mid-burn, and right before reloading.  Just want to gauge its smoke output versus my neighbors CB 6048.   8)

If no one posts one, I will take some video myself and place it on-line (BL 34-44) within the next 5 weeks or so).  O0
