Title: How much wood in a single load?
Post by: F7JC on November 17, 2014, 07:50:58 PM
I'm just curious how much wood other people load in there HE1100 per load.  It seems like I'm really loading it up these days for 10 hours.  Temps are in the 20s and I'm filling it just under half full and it last about 8-10 hours.  I'm using little bit of cherry and popular mixed.

It really depends on your heat load. Assuming average size house with average insulation, I would say that sounds like a normal amount of wood to load.

Not sure how big you box is but I have a Heatmaster 5000E and last night it was around 12 to 15 all night I filled mine up about 3/4 full of not very seasoned wood and it burn from 10:00 pm till 7:00  am keeping the house at 70 all night. Just about burn up at 7:00 am, sounds like your is about right.

I think as long as you are not creating CHARCOAL or the fire is not burning out completly, you are doing it correct

Speaking of charcoal is that generally caused by loading too much wood?
I am new to the firing of these furnaces but not to the operation.. Reason I'm inquiring is
that my ash is more "charcoal" in nature than ash.

I am learning more about this unit's short cuts and such as the days pass, but I can say the
house is warmer than ever!

Thanks!

Charcoal means too much wood. You want to be burnt down to fine ash and a few coals before you add more wood. I typically pull the ash and coals toward the door and put the wood towards the back when I load.

That is exactly what I thought. The last week or so it has actually been below freezing for a change around here and finally made the lower 20° range and it burned down to what you referenced. It has always started right back up with a little dry kindling despite my beliefs that it wouldn't :)  I will try that approach and see how things turn out.

Thanks for the information!
