Anti-freeze pricing?
« on: August 22, 2016, 04:01:02 PM »

I have a customer that wants to run antifreeze and looking for the best place to point him to.
Hercules Cryo-tek -100 seems to be the most common but the cheapest I have seen it is around $65 for 5 gallons and it is only 55% glycol.

Chemworld has 55 gallon drums of 95% glycol for $899 but it is a lot more per gallon in 5 gallon buckets.

The system is around 100 gallons (Heatmaster G100) that he needs it for and he wants it protected to -20F.

Is there anything cheaper out there that will work?

Back-up generator.

RSI...your customer does know that anti-freeze defeats the heating process doens't he?  This was one of my fears when we installed the furnace in 2011...what happens if we are away for the weekend during the winter and the power goes out?  Underground piping will stay warm for up to "maybe" eight hours, but beyond that.....playing with fire or in our case: water and LOTS of it.

I went and purchased a whole house back up generator, now I have nothing to worry about during the winter if power goes out..within 10 seconds, the Generac fires up and stays running until power is back up.  THIS is my "anti-freeze" solution.

Does the customer realize that the anti-freeze has to be replaced each season?  Or so I have read...this COULD become very expensive.

If quality glycol is used then it doesn’t need replaced that often.

It’s not cheap no matter where you get it, dinged my pocket book fairly well just for enough for the snow melt.

Another question, does anti-freeze testers for cars give an accurate reading when testing glycol in a HVAC system?

I’ve seen it both ways, some say yep, others claim nope.

I believe it depends; As the glycols are different , ethylene (car) and propylene (HVAC) - the hydrometer style tester will read one or the other but not both i.e. you need the correct style hydrometer depending on the type of glycol, but the refractory style tester will read either type of glycol.  I have used the refractory style and I don't really like them.  I found them difficult to read but maybe that's just me.
