Skid steer log splitter..
« on: February 13, 2015, 07:51:48 AM »

I just recently picked up a skid steer so I'm thinking of fabricating a splitter for the skid steer just to add to my splitting power now I'm splitting with a beast that I built about 4 yrs ago with 4way hydraulics and log lift .. So if anybody has suggestions and or pics  :photo: of your builds I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Great post.  Because you must be handy to build your own splitter before  :)

We have a horizontal splitter we built also with log lift and 4 way wedge, 25hp Kohler electric start, 22 gpm pump and 6" cylinder with 30 inch stroke.

We also have a home made skid steer splitter with same cylinder.  It sticks out like most skid steer splitters do, like Pinocio's nose. We have wedge on cylinder ram with a log extractor to peel of a chunk if it gets stuck.  some have wedge on end of beam which is nice but you better have enough power to split any chunk because if it gets stuck its hard to get off.

We also have a splitter for our mini skid that you stand on.  Ours is made by Ditch Witch but it's like a Toro Dingo.  We just call it the Dingo.  It mounts parallel with the attachment plate, or "sideways" as you are standing on the machine.  It works AWESOME! because you can articulate the splitter just like the bucket attachment.   So you can turn it upside down and split a chunk from the top and then articulate around and split the same chunk two or three times without even moving the chunk.

We are going to build a bigger one for the Skid Loader like the Dingo's.   The only negative I forsee is that because the splitter is close to the machine, the chunk you are splitting has to be out in the open enough that your skid loader tires aren't driving up on other chunks as you try to get close enough to split the one you want.

Sorry for the long post but I really like log splitters.

Racnruss... That's one of the things I'm noticing also and im seeing that a lot of the ones u buy the wedge and ram do not go down enough away from the beam to get the larger rounds in there I want to be able to pull up to almost any size round and place my splitter over it to get a full split so when I do it I want to it right.. My other one that I built I'd say took about 2 months of researching different types to come up with my own style one mistake I made not thinking ahead is my overall length to split is only 24" why I did it this way was my last boiler could not except more than 22" pieces not realizing it wouldn't last forever .. And I love those dingos what a great piece to own I rent them a lot when install fence post...

Built my own for our skid steer, 5" bore, 30" stroke, haven't found anything that it won't split, never had one stuck on the wedge yet. If does just bump it off on another chunk of wood.

Looks like I paid $2,800 in early fall of 2013 for an HD30.  Though I did find a different place had become a dealer for them and I think they were selling them a bit cheaper.  There is a bit or freight getting them to Ohio, after looking at all I could find at farms shows and fairs that was the best build unit I could find.

If the pic works this time, the ability to do this is my favorite part(ability to lift logs up to cut).  So far the largest log I have split was 28" in diameter.

I think the beam is 6-8" wide and I have a single wedge.  Normally only split logs larger than 8in, smaller ones can be a little more difficult to see, 10in and up isn't too bad just have to center it based on what you see on the sides of the beam.

Where do you live?  I have a friend selling a skid steer log splitter.  It is factory built, not sure all the details but he only wants $1200 for it.

I am in Iowa.

Doesn't matter if you build or buy, use the twin c channels instead of an Ibeam so you can look between the channels and see where you're wedge is at.

Ok I'll look into that.. If anybody has or knows of someone with a cylinder with 30" stroke looking to get rid of let me know.
