Hardy / Question
« on: December 12, 2012, 02:15:36 PM »
Do any of you Hardy guys also have an oil fired boiler?  I ask this because I am noticing that my oil fired boiler in the basement is kicking on and I seem to be using way more oil than I thought.  The plan when we put this in was to NOT use oil, only as a back up.  I talked to my local Hardy guy last night and he had me tweek the aquastat on the oil boiler to see if that would help.  That was set at 195 and I dropped it down to 180.  My Hardy is set at 180 on the high side and 165 on the low side.  This is my first year in this old farm house so I'm trying to learn how these things work, plus we added in the owb so I'm really confused now...  I sat in the basement and watched the temp guage on the inside boiler drop to about 160 and then the oil fired up and ran it up to about 190 and it shut off.  I think this is happening all the time I just recenntly noticed it.  I have a hvac guy who a freind of the family coming out Friday to  try and figure this out.  We have radiant baseboard heat and keep the house around 70.  Not sure if this is enough info for anyone to chime in but I'm just curious if anyone else has had this happen.  I have 35 gallons of oil left and I'm a little hacked off that I will need to but more.  Our temps have been 20 during the day and 0 to -5 at night.

Hello, I'm 36 and just put one in 5 weeks ago.  For me it's all new and exciting and I realize that may wear off a bit or maybe not.  So far, I really enjoy walking out and "checking on the fire" some times whether it needs to be "checked" or not.  I could sit with the door open and watch the flames for a long time...  I just moved from a big city to a 150 acre farm and could not be happier!  I have spent the last 6 weekends out cutting wood and I really enjoy that.  I gotta think that alone is good excercise and may get me a few more years in the end!  We live in an old farm house and before we put int he owb I had to buy some oil and at alomst $4.00 a gallon that was not too much fun....  I have 50 gallons left and I hope I do not have to buy anymore for a long time...

Hi there.  I live in Northern Minnesota.

I'm also a newbie but here's what I've been doing...  I have a Hardy stove but I would think the main premise is the same or close to it..

A) I cut into 24-30" chunks and just stack in rows that are 15 to 20' long and about 4' high.  I don't split and all the wood is between 6" to 12" round.  A lot it is green and it burns just fine.

B & C) Half the time when I open the door a ton of smoke come out..  I always open the bottom (Ash) door first to avoid a flash.  Then I open the main door and just let it air out for 30seconds or so so I can see what I got cookin' in there..  There is always some real nice coals in there so once the fan kicks on it lights right up.  I never clean out the ash box completely I just smooth it with a garden rake and make sure it's not touching the grates.  I let the ash build up on the sides as well.  I'm no pro I only know what's been working for me since I got the thing 4 weeks ago.  Last night we got down to 0F and I was very happy with the little wood I burned thru.  Living in Northern MN I'm sure by the end of this winter I will have a much better idea with what works and what doesn't.

We just had the H5 installed and this was suggested by my father in-law.  I did not have time to research all the brands out there and he talked to a few people he knew and then talked to the local Hardy guy.  The Hardy guy did a real good job selling him on their product.  I think the kicker for us was the stainless steel construction and the fact that they will last 25 plus years.  I just spent $9000.00 on this stove so it damn well better last that long.  25 years from now I will be 60 and probably be tired of cutting wood anyway.  I realize the ones people like best are the ones they have in their backyard and spent their $$ on...  How long have you had yours?  I don't mean to change the direction of your thread here...  I just like chatting about these darn things...

I'm curious what about the H2 makes it not very efficient?  I have an H5 and was wondering what the difference is between the the two besides the size and btu's.  I think you are on to something with your idea!!

Hardy / Newbie Hardy question
« on: November 09, 2012, 08:10:12 AM »
How often do you guys let your Hardy burn down.  My dealer told me every 3 to 4 days...  Do you guys let it burn down completely and then clean ash box and grate?  Just curious how others are doing this and what kind of procedure you guys go through?  I'm new to this and any info or help is very much appreciated!

I have the H5 and have used it for about 3 weeks.  I have not seen anything like the picture posted and I hope I never do...  I have only on 1 occasion seen a spark fly out the top.  So far I love the Hardy stove.  Can wait for -20 this winter and see how the Hardy responds.
