Home Made / what size draft fan needed?
« on: January 04, 2015, 07:45:59 AM »
Couple questions about draft fans.  Well the new OWB seems to have trouble getting back up to temp.  Maybe cause the air temp is in the 50s right now and I dont really have a good bed of coals yet?    If I decide to put on a draft fan, what size would I need?  My fire box is a 1/2 500 gallon propane tank shortened another foot.
Does the draft fan have a damper door on them?  the temp is supposed to drop from the 50s today to the teens tonight.  I will see how it works when I get a good bed of coals.  But still need some info on the draft fans because I may have to go that route.

Electronics / 20 amp breaker keeps tripping
« on: January 02, 2015, 06:24:22 PM »
I just hooked up and and started the first burn in my new owb.  It is a homemade (2nd one I have built)  taco 009 pump. Ranco aquatat. And normal solenoid for draft door.   Aquastat set at 190 and 160.  Was running fine, up to about 120 deg.  And the 20 amp breaker started tripping.  Only thing on the circuit is the owb with 12-2 wire.  Switched breaker and keeps tripping.  Ran good for about 4 hours without problem now breaker trips in about 3 seconds.  ANY IDEAS OUT THERE ?????.I am gonna take apart the pump totomorrow and see if it has locked up or something.  Also have my buddy (electricalengineer) coming over in the morning.

Plumbing / plate exchanger on WH question
« on: December 24, 2014, 01:15:16 PM »
Should the top of the hx loop tee into the blow off vlave on the side or should I tee it into the hot coming into the top of the water heater?  I only ask because my precious hookups were into the blow off valve that was mounted on the top of WH.  My relief comes out of the side of the WH.

Home Made / problems using 500 gal. propane tank
« on: November 02, 2014, 08:56:51 AM »
Has anyone had any problems using 1/2 a propane tank for the fire box?  We had some problems welding the tank to the faceplate of the fire box.  Any place the tank was welded to regular carbon steel we had more leaks.  I heard the you have to heat the propane tank prior to welding it because it is a high carbon steel.  Hope I don't have any problems in the future between the welds.  Do not need any leaks in this thing.  Thanks

Home Made / Second build in progress
« on: October 17, 2014, 08:41:25 AM »
This is my second build.  First one went with house when we sold it.  We utilized 1/2 of a 500 gal propane tank for firebox.  quicker than welding a whole square firebox.  So far all is going well.  Hopefully we will have it in service by end of Oct.  .  Thankfully the people that bought our house with huge garage ,  let me build the OWB there until I can move my car lift to my new garage being built.   Will post  more pics as the build progresses

Home Made / Insulation
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:34:02 AM »
Looking to use spray foam on outside of water jacket.  My previous Central Boiler had it on there.  Would any insulation company be able to do this?  Has anyone had this done. I am not a big fan of wrapping it with fiberglass.  I did that on my last build and just do not think it is as good as the spray on.  New build is starting next week and need to get stuff figured out.  Thanks   NEWMOD

Plumbing / Fixed my NO HOT WATER PROBLEM
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:45:27 PM »
Ok , finally, after racking my brain.  I was installing a new bathroom, pressure testing the valve and plumbing work.  The cold and hot water have been flowing backwards through the valve.  Just matters which side has the lowest pressure difference.  And either hot water or the cold backflows.  Ugh.  I should have known better.  I have my own remodeling business and should have known.  Duh.   Easy fix though,  after my wife stated she ended up taking a cold shower tonight lol.   Umm,  I'm gonna take mine now

Plumbing / HELP!! NO HOT WATER AT FAUCET
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:38:49 PM »
As stated,  OWB IS UP TO TEMP.  Water heater is heated by plate exchanger.  I do have hot water out the water heater drain and also jot water out the pressure relief valve when manually opened.  I have valves at mixer valve so I bypassed  mixer valve but still only luke warm to slightly hot water at faucet.  Water at  my faucet now should be 190.  The same temp as the OWB.  But not the case.  Help.  I really don't want a cold shower in the morning.  5his is the second year for this OWB,  it is homemade and have not had any problems at all.  HELP

Home Made / Happy with the end result
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:12:59 PM »
Just thought I would let ya know.  My homemade OWB is operating as planned.  Keeping the house at a nice and cozy 73 degrees.  I am using the "top of the line" insulated pex to the house.  I dont plan on burying it until springtime.  Hope thats not a problem.  There are only a couple things that I would change on the next one I build, maybe a larger firebox and more insulation.  I am using R30 all around now, but i'm sure it could be better.    The firebox is 42 inches deep, would make the whole thing 1 foot deeper, including water jacket.

I used to cringe when my fuel oil furnace would kick on, even keeping the house at 67 deg.

The OWB may look ugly but it really doesn't matter.  I just wanted to get it done and quit buying fuel oil.

Thanks for all the information found on this site !!

Home Made / Trouble getting to temp !
« on: December 07, 2011, 01:21:29 PM »
Hello,
Well, I finally fired up the OWB (homemade ).   Everything is working great but I cant seem to get it up to temp of 185 to close draft door.  I am thinking that the draft door is not quite big enough.  I set it up with a 4 inch round tube for draft in the door.  I think I may have to put a draft inducer fan, or cut the hole bigger and re-work that.  Easiest would probably be the draft fan.  My chimney is a 6 in double insulated stainless.  Any ideas out there.  My previous CB was a natural draft, but im thinking inducer is the way to go now.  ..
My aquastat ranges are 165-185
