Equipment / Wood splitter woes
« on: December 24, 2015, 04:42:55 AM »
So i have been aquiring parts for wood splitter and my neighbor gave me a free ram tonight. Found out it has an 8 inch bore and 26 inch stroke. i know that this ram will have slow cycle times with the engine and pump combo that i wanted to use if i am trying to achieve 3000 psi as pump will be only moving 6.3 gpm in low stage. Have a 12hp engine and was gonna use a 22 gpm 2 stage pump. Ideally i wanted to use a 5 inch ram. Question is with this ram being so large according to the calculators at only 1200 psi i will generate around 30 real tons of force which is almost 1 ton more than the 5 inch ram at 3000 psi. Could i compromise and get a single stage pump so i will have an average higher flow and only set it at the 1200 psi? If my math is right that 12 hp engine will run that and cycle would only be about an average of 10 seconds slower on the larger ram. Is it worth using the larger free cylinder or should i just spend the money on the 5 inch? Thanks

Home Made / Chimney help
« on: December 17, 2015, 07:43:34 PM »
Just wondering what you guys are doing on your homemade boiler builds as far as chimney. I just put a 6 inch schedule 40 pipe on mine and sleeved a piece of 8 inch stove pipe through that to protrude through my roof tin. Lastnight it got to hot and the insulation around the pipe got really hot and distorted my roof tin. Considering putting a piece of class a chimney over the 6 inch pipe and using that to protrude through roof tin. Any suggestions?

What size vent pipe do you guys recommend using and does anyone have any suggestions for a float? Thinking it be nice to have so one can easily check boiler water level. Thanks!

Rather than build my own wondering if it be more practical to buy one already made. Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on which doors they like best. Thank you.

Plumbing / Different ideas for piping
« on: January 03, 2015, 03:00:00 PM »
Gathering all my stuff up to start piping in my basement in preparation for an owb I'm building for next season. First decided that i will be using either 1 inch al pex or 1.25 inch 5 wrap pex for my supply and return for my boiler.Leaning more towards the al pex as the compression fittings seem easy to use and its barrier pipe and seems alittle cheaper than the 1.25. Either will acheive 100,000 btu at 10 gpm with a taco 0011 pump at a 100 feet distance from boiler to pump.  I want to run a primary secondary loop system with my furnace plenum having its own seperate pump, and also a pump for some in floor in my upstairs. My question is has anyone ran there water heater on its own aquastat that turns on a seperate pump to heat the water in tank when its needed. I figure this way it will function the same as it would normally. This way its only taking heat off my boiler when hot water is needed and i wouldnt need to run a mixing valve to keep the tank at a reasonable temp. Still debating on sidearm vs plate exchanger. I can build the sidearm for basically free but not sure it will work as good as the plate. Thanks for any suggestions.
