Do you guys leave your ash pans in? How deep is your coal bed?
Only issues I have is if the wood is a little wet it can form a crust layer of ash that will block the air flow.
I try to keep my coal bed small, so it is easier to stir/rake. And I mostly load my wood running east/ west so it stays over the grates.

I love mine. If you use it on an old chain, it takes a few passes to get the teeth the same length. It haven't tried it on a new chain yet but I would have to believe it is better. I got mine from someone that didn't like it. Best $50 I ever spent.

The woodchuck is a great tool.

I like the idea of using PT to get everything set and square. Use galvy screws to fasten your wall down to the PT.  Plywood will hold it all together anyway. A box of screws and a couple bottom plates, extra cost, but will be nice to be able to build the wall and stand it up.

I would double bottom plate. Just mark and drill your 2nd bottom plate before you put the wall together.

Most of the time is because the solenoid sticks open.

I think mine steams some out. And since it's small water capacity, it's more noticeable than other 300 gallon units. I pull from the bottom but can hear some boiling sometimes if the fire is rockin.

I stapled mine to the foam in the basement. Pretty fast and easy. Only 3-3-1/2" pour though. Works very good. Might have to raise the pipe a little if you are pouring 5-6".

Depends on how and what you are loading. My woodpile is full of dirt from loading my dumptruck with my buddies solid bottom grapple. Slotted will let some dirt fall out. Slotted bottom with tines curved upward would grab logs better I would think.

I assume the caulk is to prevent water infiltration. But maybe it is to seal the air in.

Went to feed the fire the other morning and was pretty surprised. The caulk around the ash pan door was turned into dust. Everything seemed to be working fine, and still is. Now when the fan is on, I can feel the air blowing out around the the opening. Not thru the door.

Portage & Main / Re: Should I upgrade from a cb 6048. To a 3444
« on: February 04, 2016, 03:37:21 PM »
I switched from a 6048 to a p&m 34-44. I like it better. It takes less wood to get 12 burns.

The cb seemed like your trying to stack wood up^ when loading. The p&m, you are dropping the wood down onto the pile. Cb was better for rolling in huge rounds because the door is so big. My buddy down the road has a 6048.  Now, if I have to load his stove, I think holy sh#*, that thing holds a lot of wood.

I would say the one downside is the cb has more leeway for running out of wood because of the high water capacity.

I just let my water circulate thru my garage loop and only run heat when I need it. Would be a waste to set at 50* if your not out there everyday.

Portage & Main / Re: Questions on finishing install of BL28-40
« on: December 16, 2015, 11:56:32 AM »
Logstor is bigger than 1" pex. Your crimp tool will be too small. A reamer tool will be good to have for those compression fittings so you don't booger up the o-rings.

Some people use all pex for install. Some switch to copper once inside. It depends on looks and personal preference. Some have also used heater/radiator hose as well if you need some flexibility.
