WD8000 Leaking from the rear of the stove
« on: March 23, 2014, 04:18:18 PM »

Hello Guys,  I am new here to this site and looking for some help.  I have owned my WD8000 since 2007 and it has been very good.  No complaints for years, but today noticed it took some more time than normal to fill.  (I top it off every 4 weeks to be sure its full).  Anyway saw it was leaking from the rear of the stove, if you remove the service access cover and look, it is coming right down the middle just under the chimney entrance to the stove.  Anybody had this problem?  Any suggestions on how to contact Wood doctor, i have read some horror stories on how they have gone out of business.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  I am located near Lansing Michigan.
thanks,

Yes they are out of business, can your boiler be repaired, there may be some sort of class action lawsuit, stay tuned,

If you don't have a welder I would suggest calling a local guy and having him come and take a look at it where it is a leaking and if it is feasible to have him patch it up. Shouldn't cost more then a couple hundred bucks.

Got any photos, knolll?  I have a 5000 circa 2010.  I would be curious where the leak is to see if mine is similar.  I am in Portland, and would be glad to help if I can.  That is why I bought mine, should be easier to weld than stainless if a leak occurs.

His is a lot different than yours Rich.
Yours is a mini version of the 10000.
His will be a pain in the buttocks to fix.

I wish I had some good news for you knolll.
If you go back a page or so you'll see a thread I started a few years ago.
I think I titled it "Humble Apology".
Carol and her husband called a few welders to see if their 8000 was fixable. I think one said it was, but he'd need it at his shop and there'd be no warranty when completed.
Wood Doctor did finally replace their unit with a new 8000, but it started leaking in less than a year.
You have somehow gotten more life out of your 8000 than most folks do.
I'm sure that you don't feel very fortunate at this point in time though. :-\

I guess I didn't realize they were such different designs.

In that case,  all I can offer is some JB Weld and a six pack.  Or maybe that spray on sealer that is used on the fishing boat.

If anyone would know, knolll, it would be Marty.  I have only met him once, but he seems to know what the heck is going on with these OWB's.

Rich,
I just noticed that his boiler is not a gasser like yours.
His is a WD8000.
Wood Doctor's gasser is a HE 8000. I've never seen one of their conventional boilers. I'll bet 'ol SlimJim has though.
Man, I'm getting old and senile.
You got any beer over there?

I just had to weld up a spot on my door again but had to redo the insulation. If it is leaking on the outside it is about a 4-5 hour job to tear whole thing apart and reinsulate. Had a guy come and weld it up for me instead of my baby welder cost me 100 bucks. had everything ready for him he just had to weld it. if you can get at it from just moving the roof off will be much quicker.

Welcome to my world Marty.  Of course I have beer.  Come on over.  You will have to come by helicopter.  My driveway is a hell hole.  Mix of soup and quicksand.

You are right Marty, I do know the WD8000 very well, I sold a bunch of them and only repaired (welded) one, they had a pretty good conventional boiler there, not a very efficient boiler but pretty much bullet proof, depending on where the leak is they are not very difficult to repair, where is the leak on this one.  How are you doing this year Hoardac, haven't heard much from you this winter, Warm enough for you.
