I think I've burned 4 1/2 approaching 5 cord this year.  It's been quite mild this winter in the north east so wood usage is down.

I've experimenting for the past couple of years to see if I notice any difference in wood usage.  For the first 4 years everything was cut at 24" long and split to 6 to 8 inch diameter.  Well, this year I'm finally using the wood that I cut at 20" and split to 4 to 6 inches diameter.  I appears that the wood usage is down.  Perhaps it's due to the wood being a bit drier, thus the time it takes to rekindle from an idle is much quicker, and reaction chamber temps rebound much quicker too.  What do you guys think?  Roger

I think I found the issue, I turned shop thermostat down to 50 last night and used my torpedo heater to keep around 60, threw in my usual amount for a 3 degree night, which is full, and still have most of that left after 10 hours.

Now to figure out what is going on in shop.

What kind of insulation did you use under and around the slab? I’m pretty sure most foam boards anymore are all closed cell, but I’ve been wrong before.

I am close to 5 cord this year I think. Cut logs to 22" and split  to small pieces but I am also burning end cuts I got for $300 a truck load delivered, truck holds 4 cord. Not sure what that left me when I split it up due to odd size wood pieces being chucked into a pile. This is up from last year but the heat was set higher as was the hot water untill my wife tells me it was to warm. I almost done with the pile in the picture.

Yep, I have a 16 foot straight truck with contractors sides, one of the properties we rent they had almost 150 trees logged out, loggers left the butt pieces and what not, I probably have at least 3 loads of stuff to bring home. I’ll take the tracked skid steer and the grapple to load it all then grab the inverted splitter with the skiddie.

Huh, does your rack hold roughly half a cord? I placed mine last Tuesday, length and height is a little over 4’ to make up for the 22” long pieces, I’ve already loaded todays wood into the 200.

Yup.  22" wood also.

I hooked up my modine heater and shut the radiant down, of course we are going back into the 50's this week.

Is that your 400 back there with the viewing glass?

Yep, pretty sure I won’t be doing anymore view ports, adds to the creosote problem during excessive idling, like when it’s 50-60 or even warmer. Always draws a little air in, just like having a leaky door seal or not having the damper shut all the way.

There isn't a way to seal that up?

If you seal it up then after a very short time you can’t see thru it, it also holds ash in the tube. You need an air wash of some kind in a view port to keep the glass clean and cooled somewhat.

Since the G series uses a power draft and they build quite a bit of vacuum, it will actually pull the door shut on the G400 if you just crack it I made a prototype that did shut off when it idled and only allowed air in when it was running, glass would be black by the next morning from the combustion gasses present even during a idle.

Basically used some very light springs to push the glass against the outer plate, I had ports milled into the thicker piece that held the springs, when the stove started it would pull the glass away from the outer cover which allowed air to flow around the edge of the glass. It did work as creosote was decreased, but the daily cleaning of the glass wasn’t worth it.
