Can you run a pump vertically?
« on: April 15, 2017, 06:14:15 PM »

Our Grundfos pump is mounted horizontally, that is east to west,as is my Fathers Taco pump. I have a possible usage for another pump next spring, the hot distillate water coming from my maple syrup evaporator to be pumped back into the pans to clean them periodically. If the pump were mounted vertically, north and south would it drain back completely that I wouldn't have to worry about freezing up?
Thanks in advance for your help

As long as the shaft is horizontal it doesn't matter.

Depending on the model, you may need to remove the check valve.

Keep in mind where the pump will be located.  If the water level is higher than the pump than like RSI said it can be mounted vertically.  My stove has a 90 degree elbow and the pump pushes water straight up through my loop then back into the ground to my house.

The water pump would be higher than the tank of water,so it would probably be drawing the water up about 4',then pumping it up a further 4' into the pan

I’m not sure a normal circulation pump will pull water up 4’.

I know on our transfer pumps we have to add water thru a fill hole to get em to prime if the liquid is much below the inlet of the pump, pretty much same design pump.

It won't work. You will need some sort of self priming pump.

Even if you were able to fill the pipes with water then turn it on, it might work for a while but probably not last very long.

Won't work for long. The back bushing will never get cool by the water or sap. It will Entrap air and wear out quick. or make noise.
