Another one in the books
« on: April 15, 2017, 11:04:11 PM »

With temps in the 70's and no cold in the forecast it was time to pull the plug. I gave the G200 one last good burn and let it go out. When the rain stops and the weather gets better it will get the shut down cleaning.

In the primary burn area I will take off all the panels and scrape out everything removing all the creosote and ash then vacuum it all out. In the secondary I will scrape out all the ash then carefully remove the refractory and vacuum it all out. Then I'll remove the venter plate and clean that area and the chimney then cap off the chimney.

I haven't had to add any water the entire heating season but I am wondering if it should be topped off for the off season to minimize air in the top of the boiler?

To finish it off I need to change the loading door gasket and clean up the front big time as my door gasket never did stop leaking all season.

All this and then back to being wood slave to do it all over again next year.

Was hoping to get another week of run time, two kids home from college equals a minimum of 8 showers per day and countless loads of laundry. Don't think it is going to happen.

Does this add to the amount of deposits in the stove?  I have topped mine off in the past I also wonder if I should do it or not.  Just tested my water and have about 1000ppm of nitrates and a ph of roughly 7.2

What do you guys recommend for nitrate levels in a mild steel unit.  1000 or 1500?  I've heard 500 is acceptable but have been told 1500 is best and also have been told to keep it around 1000. I have never gotten a straight answer.  The manual says minimum of 500 and that's all it says.

Heatmaster recommends a minimum of 730.

Slim, should the sample be sent in now or prior to next heating season? Once I add the water I will run the pumps regardless to make sure everything gets well blended together. Are you still selling Heatmaster also?

I usuallly draw off a sample when we do our initial spring cleaning for the customer and send it in for them, I like to do it that way because most folks don't want to run the circus all summer and I want the sample while the water is well mixed.
Although it pains me greatly,I addressed that question a few minutes ago on another thread, at this point no I am not and I don't see a very good possibility that I ever will again!

Seems kinda odd to not have the nightly chore of loading the boiler?

I was thinking the same thing. Let mine go out yesterday. Left for work this morning without loading, and didn't have to go back outside after supper.  Funny how you get into a routine.
Oh well, October will come soon enough and it will start all over again.

Mines out now…but temps are expected to dip here again. I’m actually out of waste oil :o  Ten years ago I’d laugh in your face if you said eventually I would, I had like barrels and barrels of the stuff stacked two high in numerous places. I blame it on going to no-till, instead of having to change oil on a few before we were done, now they might go an entire year and still not get a hundred hours.

Anyways, I’m gonna try a batch burn, I have something I want to try to see if a really convenient way can be had to get a gassifier up to temp quick.

I run all summer for domestic water. Do a batch burn by lighting the charcoal right above the nozzle. Gasses off in seconds. Run it up to temp, then unplug the fan or flip the switch.

I have just enough scrap stainless left to roll up a custom size charcoal chimney. place two largish quarter rounds over the nozzle, round sides together, get the charcoal burning and dump it in the crevasse. Stack the rest of the wood around it.

I shut my G200 down April 1st and capped the chimney. Still haven't had time to clean it out, hopefully this weekend won't be as busy as this past one.

Do you guys use the poly brush for cleaning your stainless steel chimneys? I tried a 6" poly and it was too loose in the flue to do any good. Do you have to go to a 7" poly to have it clean a 6" properly?
