I helped an old friend out yesterday
« on: August 18, 2017, 05:51:07 AM »

He moves bridge beams, this one went to the I-81 and I-88 interchange area, it is 130 feet long and weighs 65000 pounds for those of you that know I-88, I bet you can understand how tired my right arm got shifting that old Mack, long slow ride from Maine but it was fun!

Thats what always struck me as weird about the older Macs, a straight 5 or 6 speed in em, Mack engines myst be real torque monsters or the truck itself is a real dog when fully loaded. Always looking out for a deal to build another grain truck. Have one with a DT466 and a straight 7 speed, that one doesn’t do too bad, the old truck has a 3208 and a 13 speed. I prefer the International semi tractor with a 9 speed, can’t remember which Cat it has but it’s more than torquey enough, have gone across the scales at cargo with 92,000 gross.

With 600hp under the hood don’t think I’d ever see a need for viagra in the future.

I get it Slim. Sometimes it's fun to get behind the wheel again. We have one semi licensed for OTR. Load gluten 7  miles from home, go to Loveland, Co. unload and reload dogfood and come home. 20 hours. 379 Pete, 550 Cat(C15) 18 speed. DANG! The kid did good when he bought that one.

About a mile south and a little east of us is the largest substation in the US. They’ve been working on expanding it for well over a year now. About fifteen miles of optic cable dedicated to just the substation was bored in last summer. One of the local trucking company hauled nothing but gravel for months, got their jewels in the fire on that one as the drivers decided the approved route was too rough and started using other county roads to get to it, ended up footing the bill for about three miles of county road being repaved after they destroyed it.

Anyways, the neighbor that I rent a considerable amount of ground from is also the project manager there, they brought in four new transformers at 500,000 lbs apiece, those were empty yet btw, each one will hold 27,000 gallons of transformer oil when they are finally filled. I didn’t get to see a single one moved either :(  The company that moved em placed 1 1/4” steel plates over every culvert, on the larger culverts they placed mini bridges over the culverts then build each side up with mats. Several intersections were build up with mats on the shoulders so they would have enough swing room. Before being put into use they will have 30’ tall blast walls built between each one, the old transformers had a habit of catching fire and taking the one next to it as well.
