Kiln room
« on: August 14, 2017, 05:24:11 PM »

Talked to a guy this afternoon, runs a sawmill and builds cabinets, aquarium stands or whatever. Sounds like he’s working out of his garage now, is working on a 30x32 shop to move everything into, wants a consistent 70 degrees as well as a consistent humidity, talking about a stand alone dehumidifier as well as adding a humidifier to the air handler for winter. Now for the interesting part, he already cuts his own wood but is paying for kiln drying, wants to add on another 1000 sq ft or so as a kiln room, I’m imagining we’ll need several dehumidifiers in that as well.

Is he hooking a wood furnace to this?

Thats his plan, he knows it won’t get as warm as a dedicated kiln, but doesn’t care, all he has available is LP and he vividly remembers paying $5/gallon that last winter with all the polar vortexes, then of course a lot of places would only deliver a hundred gallons at a time as it was in serious short supply here.

We supplemented a solar kiln with a whole bunch of scrap cast rads a customer had one time. He loved it. Now it worked rain or shine.

Lumber is easy with a hydronic system as it needs to dry slowly, firewood on the other hand needs to dry as fast as possible for production, really difficult to do with 180 degree water temps, pretty much need 300 degrees for that job.

This customer was drying lumber, he built furniture.

So does mine, like I said, if his homemade takes longer than a actual commercial kiln he wasn’t too worried about it as dimensional lumber needs to dry slower to avoid splitting or warpage. Nice and fast for firewood would promote splitting which would help it dry even faster. We talked at length, even if it takes longer he isn’t too concerned as he won’t be paying a third party to do it for him.

The kiln was big enough to run a forklift in and stack packs of lumber in. Had a clear roof , with a ceiling, the air space heated up on a sunny day and a fan pushed it down into the lower room. We put at least a dozen big old cast rads in the upper attic space (heavy!) and circulated through them.
I think he picked up the rads fairly cheap.
