anyone running a 325-G?
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:15:28 PM »

Saw the latest Nature's Comfort video on youtube about the newest 325-G.  It looks pretty nice with some good features.

If you have one, how much are you heating with it and where do you live?

You can check out my other posts and see my thoughts. In general, I like it, but it's not an efficient model by any stretch.

It's a wood burner. I can get 12 hours on a 20F night if I use good hardwood, otherwise, it's a struggle unless I'm willing to let water temperature drop below setting. As I said in another post, I like the coal, but it eventually clogs the air supply in the bottom of the fire-box. I'd like to find a solution, because I have seen the beifits of adding coal. I'm guessing that I use about 2.5-3 cords a month on average.

I have friends with  175 and the 250.  I like the water jacket around chimney but they are kind of hard to load with the low fire box and smallish door.

So, when I saw that 325g, it has a huge door, taller firebox, and the above the fire air tube.   Looks like you could load some gigantic chunks into it with a skid steer or something.

Hey there!

Your grates never get clogged when burning coal? Any other recent observations to share?

Ive burned coal in a nc, quality of the coal is more important when you dont have shakers.  There is really no good answer as to making it do better, as coal differences can be huge.

As far as the 325G goes, I believe id put it up against ur 220 rwncruss.  Md aint geting the beet of burn times but you should see what hes heating.  It's around 8000 sq ft isnt it md???

Yes they do after 3 or 4 days burning wood/coal mix. I plan on my clean out day and let the stove burn down. Then just shovel out the ash and clear the air holes. I burn the coal in the front over the air holes and keep wood in the rear at the flue, when it burns down there is always enough wood coals to rake forward to re start the fire.
Also remember; wood coals on the bottom, layer of wood on top of wood coals and up the sides, coal in the middle over the air slots. I'll put together some photos as soon as I can.

More of a Bordeaux guy, but love the memories of that swill!

Rick, I was looking for some  photos you previously posted and couldn't find them. I wanted to try fire brick on the side like you did and also come up with some shaker grate system. I figure some of the clever guys on this forum would have some ideas, but haven't heard any yet.

Why not just buy a NCB 250 coal unit. Works awesome with either wood or coal.
Have to tried to contact Narure comf? Can they retro for you for a shaker grate.
I have the steel grates. They seem to be better than the cast grates. Never get clogged. Mine have been going since Oct with no clean out. Just shake it down every 14-18 hrs and dump the ash every 3 days.
Call nature and ask them about shaker grates. You also need air from under the grates for coal.
Good luck.

Don't want to hassle with trying to sell my 325G and pay another 4K or so for the difference. NC says it can't be retrofitted cost effectively.  I've tried "shaking' the coal, but after 2 days the air supply gets more than 50% clogged and I have to clean the whole thing out. Seems like Rick has the same issue. I prefer to burn wood, but if I could get some longer burn times on the coldest nights that would be a luxury.

There is no coal around here so I never deal with the coal model.

This is the info from the Nature's Comfort parts catalog:

For drop-in field installation on NCB-120 & 175 (2 sets needed). The NCB-250 & 325G
require additional modification and is at your own risk (3 sets needed). All 4 models can be
ordered with the bumper grate package pre-installed

Centers are rocked by bumper arm that must be field installed on ash pan. 1/4" flat stock is
needed on either side to center on grate support and to hold back small firebrick needed for
lining firebox (Must be purchased separately) ***17 FBK-SML needed***
