Classic Edge 550 HD
« on: May 24, 2018, 02:48:00 AM »

Yesterday I took possession of a new CB Classic Edge 550 HD with Wi-Fi.  It's the titanium stainless steel unit.  My E-Classic 1400 was working great when I pulled it off the pad.  My nephew wants it so I'm getting it ready to get it to him, he should get a few more years out it.  It's just the maintenance will be much easier with the Edge 550 than it is with the 1400.  My lower back and neck problems do not allow me the luxury of keeping it.  Roger

Roger   Could you post pictures soon as you install?  I think many would love to see the next generation of boilers coming out.

Hi guys - I didn't see your request for photos until this morning.  I hope to have time to post some later today.  Looking this thing over, it will be much easier to keep the Hx clean, access to it is so simple compared to the E-1400.  I want to go to the local HVAC supply store and pick up a boiler brush that I can use to sweep through the fins of the Hx.  The reaction chamber can be accessed from the front and back making it much easier to get all of the ash out of it.  One of the things on my to do list is get the wi-fi sinc'd to my iPhone sooner rather than later.  From my iPhone I will be able to make some changes to a few of the parameters (i.e. high set-point, pulse setting, and a couple of others).  Roger

Okay guys, here's a couple of the pics of my CB Classic Edge 550 HD.  The first pic is of the vertical heat exchanger, accessed by simply opening a door in the rear of the OWB.  The second pic is the primary and secondary combustion elbow.  That chain is connected to a stepper motor (not in view) via a shaft, no more solenoids to fail.  I'll add a few more pics when I get a chance to take more of them.  I've been trying to get the wifi to sinc with my cell phone but it fails to do so.  I believe it's more of operator malfunction as opposed to equipment malfunction.  I'm not to give up so I'll keep trying.  Heck I have all summer to get it to work for me.

Don't you have to connect the wifi to an access point? Seems like directly to your cell phone wouldn't make sense since it would loose connection as soon as you leave.

The stepper motor is intriguing, where is it located?  Solenoids haven't been the most reliable, altho the current model we have on C series has been pretty good. The old 4x240 ones seemed to have gone down in quality. I wonder if a stepper motor could be retrofitted on old models, is it big?

Yoder - When I get a few minutes, I'll try to get to get a pic of the stepper motors.  They are not that big.  Below the fire door there's a panel which is easily removed to access them.  With exception of the pump and electrical connections and the vertical Hx, everything is in the front.  The reaction chamber can accessed from the front as well as the rear.  Roger

Roger   Looks great, how did you extend the wiring and pex from the back to the side, or did you just reposition the unit.  In my thinking I was concerned how to accomplish that challenge as I already have pored pad. Thank you for the pictures.

trailmaster, I have mine on pavers(sp?) so the center isn't covered, it's bare pea-stone with approximately 6 inches of clearance.  Before the guy lowered the OWB in place he put in the splice kit that CB has available, I extended the electrical.  Once that was done he was able to lower the OWB in place and I finished the connections; plumbing, electrical, etc... It made no sense to me to spend a lot of money to do something I'm more than capable of handling myself.  As for the electrical, I simply put in a weather proof junction box under the OWB which is accessible by removing the center rear paver.  I used 12/2 with ground uf-b cable anyway so it should be okay.

RSI - You are correct, I "misspoke", it has to link to my wireless modem.  I believe part of my problem for it not linking up is it may be too far from the OWB, it's about 130 feet away.  I'm going to check with Comcast to see if they off a signal booster, which should help.

You are probably better off just getting a wifi extender from somewhere like Bestbuy or Walmart.

Exactly, one from Comcast, ATT, Sprint is most likely the same thing from Walmart or Staples but with a different case and a much higher price tag.

I installed a outdoor access point on the back porch to get a stronger signal in the shop.

As long as you can see the back porch I’ve been at the back of the farm and still had wifi, almost half a mile maybe.
