Title: Now That Hawken's Gone......
Post by: Roscoe on October 09, 2016, 02:44:22 AM
Hawken Energy is out of business!

Owners, what are your thoughts?

My stove is only a year old and I thought they would still be in the game after they added their EPA compliant line of stoves. I'd like to say I'm pissed off but I kind of expected something like this to happen. Especially after being a Wood Doctor owner. In other words, I bought the stove for the stove and never figured the warranty in whatsoever.

I'm curious as to what caused Hawken's demise?  I see the company was up for auction back in June. I'm wondering if anyone acquired it as a whole or if it was parted out?

They defiantly talked a good game.

It's a gamble every day in business, they gambled on an approved stove and didn't come through, it's sad that this stuff happens but this is what regulation does, it decides winners and losers, perhaps by the time your unit needs to be replaced, the market will stabilize with reputable manufacturers and they will all not only pay attention to upcoming rules but will also do their part in making those rules, I know that when those rules came through here in Maine 8 years ago, I fought hard for the old units,it took years for the market to even realize what happened, today the market is ripe with replacement units and those who stuck it out are the folks still in the game.
Kind of like playing Texas Hold Em with your competitors!

I heard there is a company in Indiana trying to buy them and keep it open?

With no brand bashing intended, their gasifiers don't look very easy to maintain. Brushes and all... I noticed that on the auction most of their business vehicles were broken down, bearings out, dead batteries etc. It looked like they were really scraping bottom for quite a while before they closed their doors.

I don’t know about reversing it, first of all a god awful lot of money was spent to meet the standards.

Secondly if you don’t care about smoking your neighbors out if you have any, then your probably not a very good neighbor. I’ve seen the smoke come out of my old conventional, hit the temperature inversion, follow the ground for over a quarter mile then finally cross the road.

I would tend to agree... jumping back and forth on regs is a real pain for everybody. New technology is a good thing as long as it comes with enough time to adjust.
Id never want to go back to my old MF5000. Reliable but my GS100 has way less smoke and really isn't much more complex. Probably less total time spent cleaning.

Don’t get me wrong here, I love my G series, I burn less wood while heating more space than my old conventional could. But instead of mandating something and driving how many companies out of business now, how about a cash for smokers program instead much like cash for clunkers? I mean if I was really cynical I’d say driving companies out of business was the desired result, a lot easier to control people when they are relying on unemployment and food stamps to survive.

If I was really really cynical I’d say they’d hope to just plain ban wood burners altogether as its impossible to tax the firewood somebody cuts on their own property, not to mention somebody who is independent enough to supply their own heat is a lot harder to get hooked on the government tit.

If it was really about clean air, then why not ban imports altogether from countries who don’t meet the same clean air standards North American manufacturers are forced to meet? Eventually all the crap that is spewed into the air in China or India will find it’s way here eventually anyways.

Glad someone understands what this is really about.  I call it socialism, full control.  When they have that they can shut us down at anytime.
