another newbie
« on: July 15, 2014, 06:04:04 PM »

Hello All, Another newbie here looking at a 28-40 with a lot of questions.
Any dealers close to area 62014, about 50 miles north of St.Louis on the Illinois side.
Which is cheaper to purchase from the factory or a dealer?
How does it get off loaded from the truck? Is there a boom on the truck?
I have a 2000 sq. ft. up and 2000 sq. ft. down and MAYBE a 2500 sq. ft. building that is 400 ft. away from the house. Is a 28-40 big enough or do I need to go bigger, still the building is a huge maybe.
Thanks for all the help, I know I will have a boat load of other questions

Good morning Pops69, Welcome to the site,You have lots of questions and I'll try to answer them for you.
First, as far as dealers in your area, I'm not sure as I live in Maine but am a factory rep and will be happy to ask the office regarding your zip code and I'll PM you the info if you like, we do sell direct if there is no local dealer and it's then my job to help with any questions you have from that point on, I will PM you my info in a bit. Delivery comes on an independent carrier with a tractor trailer, it is the customers responsibility to line up equipment to off load it from the trailer SAFELY, they are heavy.
Sizing, we should have a bit more info on that one such as are you including basement, hot water, how well insulated and do you have backup heat as well. The best way to figure out heat load from this distance is by a local dealer or a history of how many BTU's your home has used in the past, (cords of wood, gallons of propane / oil or cubic feet of natural gas ), Please don't cut yourself short here and don't buy on the future sizing as we really don't like to oversize either, at this point I would say the 28-40 would do the job just fine but let's be sure.

Thanks slimjim.
I have a 25 year old Royall forced air wood burner.
Last year was a really cold winter for my area, so I went thru a ton of wood filling 4-5 times a day.
That got old, and I know my wood burner is on its last leg, probably won't make it into nexy year. I have propane back up, and you know the prices on that.

Any Idea on the cords and gallons of propane? some of the guys on here last winter were a bit aggravated with the cost and availability of propane in the Indiana area, I think it was around $8 per gallon and 100 gallon allotments, we never saw that here!

It got over$4.00 a gallon, but stayed with wood.
A couple of days could only get to 60, If I switch my duct work from wood to propane its a real pain, thats why I only switch twice, winter and summer for AC.
House was like that when I bought it.
Cord wise I couldn't keep count, it was alot, thats all I did last winter was cut and split, I don't mind  gives me something to do in the winter, but about Feb. it gets old, every weekend.

I know exactly what you mean, my suggestion is to read read read, as you install use the best product you can afford, especially on the underground pipe!

I'm assuming that's the Logstor, I read it was about $12 a foot, is that close, also does the factory carry that?
If I hook my hoot water heater do I need another tank like it shows in the down loadable installation manual?

I think the Logstor is at 14.50 per foot, they took a big hike a few months ago, yesthey can ship it with a boiler, each install is different, we should talk about your setup and design it from there.

I'm thinking about 60-75 ft. from boiler to house.
After it comes in the house, can I hook on with copper?

I unloaded my 2840 on Wednesday. It was all a 48 horse Kubota tractor wanted. As slimjim stated, the stove is VERY heavy. Good luck.

I'm just outside of Springfield IL and took delivery of mine last month. I had to order it from the factory and it was all my John Deere 4050 would handle getting it off the trailer. I hope to start the install in a couple of weeks, but might get busy with moving in.
