General Discussion / Outdoor Boiler Care Emails
« on: October 26, 2017, 12:23:54 PM »
Anyone else receiving unwanted emails from some dam site (Hawken energy) on behalf of Hawken ceo? Every email gets marked as junk here but the dirty bagger keeps changing the sending address just a little bit so some get past the filter.

Sure would like to know what dirty sob sold my email address to the Hawken outfit.

Plumbing / Have any luck with shark-bites?
« on: July 25, 2014, 04:51:35 PM »
I will do a few mods in the crawl space and really do not want to drain the bulk of what is going on in that part of the system. I am thinking of doing a quick cut and splice with isolation valves using shark-bites if they are considered reliable and then sweat in the mods. My 40 years of touching plumbing has always been with copper.

Any input is appreciated.

Empyre / Is Crown Royal Pristine - Empyre Elite
« on: January 28, 2013, 05:55:23 PM »
Looks like the Pristine and Elite are the same. Specs are stated identical and they obviously look like twins. The Crown Royal website states a 20 year warranty while Empyre states 10 years.

The 20 year limited warranty of for the Crown Royal is through Greentech Manufacturing Inc.

Does anyone know about this?

Home Made / Steel Grade of Wood Boiler
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:58:29 AM »
Is there a definitive answer to what steel to use on firebox and water jacket?

My thoughts are that boiler or floor plate is not necessary. Hot or cold rolled A36 should be acceptable. Firebox should be 1/4" to still allow heat transfer while holding up to rough service. Water jacket at 10 gauge.

Will there be corrosion issues later with hot roll steel if it has not been acid cleaned (pickling)?
Are stays required in an unpressurized heater?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Open System Question
« on: December 21, 2012, 12:32:39 PM »
After searching for hours about this and coming up empty, I will ask this:

Does the vent to atmosphere for the water have to be the highest vertical point of the system? If the vent is lower than portions of piping, will the water siphon away?

If the site only allows for the OWF to be downhill from the house and loss to siphon is an issue, how can it be remedied?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Boiler Purchase or Repair
« on: November 30, 2012, 09:35:57 AM »

Hello to all. A few questions.

I have a home made sand box w/copper coils on an old home built wood burner (40+ years old) with a 6" flue through the garage roof. The stove is not airtight and constructed of sheet steel. The cast iron door frame has warped (was under the impression that it could not happen) and that has created an overdraw.

First question, anyone ever deal with such a situation and how to go about a repair.

Second question, I am wondering what tends to be the best time of year to purchase a new boiler, from a cost savings point of view that is. Spring, Summer, Fall or Winter. I see a small gassifier on sale now for under 4,000 (indoor model). I could go either indoor (easy) or outdoor (with a little more work and supplies).

Third question, if a boiler has a larger flue connection, is it ok to reduce to meet an existing chimney pipe?

Thank you in advance for any input you may have.
