General Discussion / First Gas Cans, Now This
« on: August 22, 2017, 10:13:43 PM »
OK. We all know the frustrations we have went through with Obama's gas cans. They suck, we all know it, and we have spent our money to fix them. Now we have another Obama left over to fix, Turkey Cookers or any other LP appliance.
I got a new turkey cooker yesterday and it had this bullcrap on it that I had to reset every 15 minutes or it would shut off the gas and make the cooker go out. Needless to say, it has been fixed so it will run properly, but why did I have to waste my time doing this. I am not as stupid as Barrak Obama, so why do I have to waste my time fixing things designed to keep him from hurting himself? Someone as stupid as him, needs hurt.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Fired up
« on: November 17, 2016, 08:11:58 PM »
Lighted the fire today. Kinda warm but supposed to get cooler and maybe freeze this weekend....about time! It was nice to get harvest done, calves weaned and started on feed, cows on cornstalks and fertilizer applied before the weather turned bad. Yields were the best ever. Overall, a good year for our family and looking forward to a good heating season.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Shutting Down
« on: March 30, 2016, 11:58:58 AM »
With temps in the 50's,60's and a few 70's it's time to stop burning for the season. Going to miss "feeding the beast". Will burn it out, let it cool a couple of days then load it up with cardboard and burn it hot to burn out the creosote. Clean it up good, pull a water sample and forget it until October.

Fire Wood / Next Year's Wood
« on: October 27, 2015, 08:27:31 PM »
Got rained out of harvesting so loaded up the saws and went tree hunting. Sure enough, I found a few that needed to be dropped. Dropped 4, limbed them and cut them to haul. Took home a pickup load, got the wife to bring a pickup and trailer, I hooked my trailer with skidsteer and grapple and we hauled home 4 cord. While I cut to length, wife went back and got skidsteer. Put splitter on skidsteer and proceeded to split wood. All loaded on hayrack for drying. Me.......HAPPY! Always nice to be off to a good start.

Fire Wood / Enough Wood?
« on: March 29, 2015, 07:53:25 PM »
Was wondering how many have enough wood for next season. I like to have wood cut, split and stacked for a year before burning but that isn't happening this year. With this being my first year with a OWF, I've used more than I thought I would. So, I'm burning wood that was supposed to be for next year.

This season I've burned 9 cords. If weather is average I will be done burning in about 2 weeks, getting rid of some punky stuff in the process. Sure, I will burn a little gas but not much.

I'm thinking I will burn 9 to 10 cords next season but only have 7 cut, split and drying right now. I have enough standing dead Ash and Elm to get to 10 cords but will it be dry and ready to burn Feb.? The planters have to roll by April 9 so if the wood isn't cut by then, it will be mid may before I get back to cutting.

How os everyone else doing?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Wives
« on: February 04, 2015, 09:23:54 PM »
We touched on this in another post "just spent another $5000". Slim and I both brought up how our wives help us in our wood burning addictions.
Slim stated that his wife came from the city, learned to help him and never looked back. My story is very much the same. Met a gal from Detroit, brought her to the farm, she moved to the farm, learned how to farm, now farms and cuts, splits, stacks and burns wood with me. And she really is involved in all of it, I couldn't do it without her. Sure, at times she needs my advice but most of the time she can keep the operation running.
My question....How many of us are blessed to have a wife that really "gets it"? Understands us and wants to be involved and help us with this wood burning thing we do?

« on: November 30, 2014, 06:27:00 PM »
Sent my water sample 23 days ago. Haven't gotten any reply about it. I know this is probably a busy time for them. What was your response time?

Portage & Main / Size DOES Matter
« on: November 12, 2014, 07:17:04 PM »
I have 6 cords of wood cut 14 to 16 inches long and split small to fit the woodstove I had. It has been cut, split and stacked from 2 to 4 years so it is plenty dry. Started the 2840 with this stuff and was getting only 8 hour burns with it. When this weather turned cold I wasn't getting burn times that I needed. Started loading hard wood cut 24 to 30 inches long that has been drying for 12 to 16 months and split big. I mix both and I'm getting good burn times up to 14 hours. The small stuff ignites easy and the big stuff is lasting a long time. I'm keeping my wife warm and happy! Happy Wife- Happy Life!

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Nervous
« on: November 07, 2014, 02:19:00 PM »
Wet grain is full so I need to let the dryer run for about 6 hours before I start combining corn again so I lit the first fire in the BL 2840. Now I sit and worry about it. Sure hope all is set up properly. It's been burning for an hour now and the smoke has cleared up, cardboard is all burned and the wood is burning. Water temp is already up to 120.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Rust
« on: October 18, 2014, 10:09:25 AM »
Finished the install of my BL 2840 yesterday. Filled it with water and let the pumps run all night to get all the air out and check for any leaks. This morning my filter was filled with rust. I am thinking this rust came from the boiler. I cleaned the filter 6 hours ago and now I have discolored water but no actual rust in the filter. Do I need to drain the system and start over or should I not worry about the discoloration?

Portage & Main / Glycol?
« on: October 13, 2014, 04:38:53 PM »
Finishing up my install of the BL 2840. I wasn't planning on adding any glycol to the water but the guy helping me says I need it. Do I?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Shelter For OWB
« on: April 09, 2014, 08:22:32 PM »
Lancealot brought up a topic I have wanted advice about. How many of you have your OWB under shelter?
Being a newby, I would like to put my 28-40 under a carport. I would have both sides and the north end covered, open to the front (south). The OWB would be in the back left corner with enough room behind it to get to the electrical, pumps, etc. I have my wood stacked on "hayracks" so the carport would be wide enough to park a rack of wood beside the OWB for easy reloading. When a rack gets empty I would replace it with another one. Is this a good idea or am I setting myself up for a disaster?

New member here but I've been lurking for months. Wanted to let you know that, thanks to this website, I purchased a BL 2840 yesterday from  Southern Portage and Main in Eagle Lake Mn. Luke is a great guy to work with. He has it at his place and I will be picking it up in 2 or 3 weeks.
