Home Made / Re: Gasification wood boiler build

Well she is working great.Well hopefully not for another month anyways ;)
I had drawings I made of my all my pieces for shearing them and bending them.Unfortunately I deviated from them as I went a bit.
I don't even know if I still have them. Not really worth trying to make and sell plans.
I figure if a guy has enough skill to build one he can design and engineer something to what he wants anyways.Just like what I did.
I am more then glad to give advice if I can give it.

Thanks on that, I've got a few years under my belt ;D

The welding is the easy part, calculating bend tolerances, material lost, material gained, inside dimension, outside dimension, that's the hard part. Non of this project will have any CAD design, only good ol' fabrication skill. So when I get to weld its like a chance to kick back and relax and enjoy it for a moment.
Lookinf good !!!!
I know what you mean.Got to count for loss in a bend and where your going to gain on a side.Thats how I built mine ,and she came out great.
I see you went with the octagnal box shape like i did.I know you will get better heat transfer from all the flat sides than a circle.
I am going to enjoy seeing how yours comes out.As I know you have alot more research done than I did on the calculation side of things.Should be an great performer when its done.

NIce job on the log lift.
I am not sure though that your going to want to steady it and try to let the winch off while its flashing back fire on you when you load.
I have thought of a similar idea using the winch to raise a self leveling set if "forks" that would swivel into the boiler opening and then just either dump or roll the log off the side.then pull the "forks" back out and let down to the ground.
I hope it works out like you want. You will love the free heat you get this year. >:D

I would go with forced air.
I would locate the burn chamber up about 2" from the bottom
I would use a 6" stack diameter.
I would use an insulated door on the burn chamber.DOn't waste your time with a water cooled door.just my opinion.
I would also make you door way opening as large as you possibly can.you'll thank yourself later
good luck

If you have ? just holler and I will help if I can.

Hey Jackel.  I've looked at your build pictures over and over.  Awesome build, and many thanks for keeping us all informed.  Your work has sure helped a lot of people out in understanding gasification boilers better.

I've got a build in mind and have a quick question in mind.  I see you put a bypass in, but I've seen other models that don't have the primary burn chamber with a bypass in it.  Do you think a by-pass is always necessary?

Thanks again!

Yes I think a bypass is a good thing to have. When you load the stove you get less smoke coming back out at you while its running.I mean even when the blower is shut off.Open the by pass and then load wood. You get less smoke in your face.I also like the ability to open the bypass and run it like a conventional boiler.I wouldn't build one without it.

Nice load of wood!
I agree it has been horriblly hot all summer.I need to get cutting myself but right now I am working 7 days a week and 10 to 15 hrs.Just no time :bash:

Hey jackel, have you seen the new gasser units from natures comfort? I think they may have seen yours on here or somewhere and how well its working because they're new design is ironically similar to yours. And I can say that I know for a fact you dreamed up yours far before they did and we just built the units this past spring. I'd say they owe you a bit of thanks ($) for all the R&D you did ;D
I haven't checked into them yet ,but I did hear that they have a radiused insert in the bottom like I did.I will have to check them out and see how i helped them improve thier product. ;D
Thanks for the heads up.

I use it everyday to keep in touch with friends and family.I have actually gotten some free stuf on there from some companys i like on there.
I find it easier to keep up with whats going on than going to all the websites i like most of the time. ;D

Wow I am sick for awhile and then don't get back on here and I find out we've been bought out.
I hope this board stays the same.I don't go to arborist site hardly anymore because of all the ads and stuff.
I hope the new owner does leave things the way they are as everyone likes the site without any influence from the industry.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Your firebox dimensions I think are way to small.I would definatly go bigger on it.

I had some crazy things happen to me over the winter.Pharmacist damn near killed me on an over dose of steroids.Took me a long time to recover that.I had to have my brothe n law come and cut wood for me to get through the rest of the season. Then I started building a cabin to replace my old motor home and I have been busy with that.I will have to get back over here more now.

Large amount of surface are is needed to transfer the heat. That is why you see so many tubes in the exchanger section.

Petemoss,
Very nice unit!I love the large amount water storage as that is the key to this whole heating operaton.
I am going to have to go back and recheck this thread when i got more time.again awesome work

I still keep tossing the idea of putting one of these up on the front of my boiler so I can load wood out of the rain.I like the tarp made to fit as a great idea.
