Shaver Furnace / Re: How'd your Shaver do this past winter??
« on: April 26, 2015, 11:34:49 AM »
My shaver 165 burned 5 cords from Late November to 1st of March. Have 2300 sq log home and live south of Kansas City KS. This was my second year with my 165. Last summer I added a dry well and Digital Thermostat. This year I will be replacing the door gasket and adding more insulation over top of boiler.

I would add wood before leaving for work at 5:00am. Wife added some small chunks (can't handle the bigger pieces) around 11:00 to 12:00 and I would fill it up at 7:00 pm. When the temp is above 32 then only two time a day and above 40 then once a day. However when we get to zero then I have to add wood every 5 to 6 hours. Big demand for heat when temp drops to zero with a log home. I wish I had chosen a larger unit because I would like to heat the garage and a green house later on.

I switch from Hedge to smaller dry oak about 15% moisture. I run 170 damper open off at 175. Fan on at 165 off at 170.

I am going to add a small circulation pump so when temp gets to 185 it will come on and circulate water from the bottom to the top. This will only happen when demand for heat is not needed all day. Like today. This morning 42. This afternoon 75.

Shaver Furnace / Will Shaver be around after EPA Regs change

Does anybody know if Shaver will survive the new EPA Regulations on OWB? If they don't then what happens to the warranty?

I did add a 8in long pex pipe to the over flow and placed a 5 gal bucket under it to see how much I was loosing. I only fill when the temp is over 180 and after a week I have about 2 gals in the bucket.

All electric house 2500 sq ft. before OWB winter electric was 850.00 to 1000.00 per month after OWB 125.00 per month

No leaks. I just comes out the over flow tube as the temp in the boiler raises.

Shaver Furnace / Water Usage

I have a model 165 and I have been turning on the file value each time I add wood. I leave it on until it over flows. When I am adding wood the temp is usually about 158 to 165. The max temp is usually 175 but would be higher if outside temp is higher so not as much demand for heat. I feel like I am added to much water and am watering down the chemicals. I test with a test kit and am adding boiler solution as needed. I have had only one boil over due the warm weather and wind blowing.

My question is should I be adding water when the temp is higher because of the thermal expansion of water as it is heated. I would like to come up with some method of capturing the excess water from the over flow and return it to the boiler when the temp is lower.

Chris,

Since mine is horizontal I pushed it in all the way and put some caulking on the end where the wire comes out to hold it in place. My dry well extends about 14" into the tank. It is nice to be able to see what the actual temp is.

I put in a Ranco two stage. I made a dry well out of copper tubing and a copper 1" threaded reducer and attached it to the 1" nipple that is on the back of the furnace. It is about 2 to 3 inches about the outlet going to the pump and on to the house.

I am set at 170 for fan with 5 diff. The second stage controls the damper and it is set to 175 with 5 diff.  So when the water temp cools down to 175 the damper opens and if it keep dropping then at 170 the fan comes on. This is my second year on the 165. Last year burned about 5 cords of oak and hedge.

My electric bill used to be 900 per month now it is 160 per month. I cut my own wood so my furnace will have paid for itself in two years.

I am new to OWB installed a Shaver 165 back in summer of 2013. What should I be doing when its time to shut down for the season.

Thanks,

Does anybody know how you can tell how old my Saver 165 is?

There is a serial number on the door. I purchased it reconditioned from Shaver in June of last year. I had the bigger fan and damper added before they shipped it.

Shaver Furnace / Re: Shaver 165 is working great.

I am new to this forum. I have the model 165. I purchased it last year in the spring. It was a reconditioned unit. I ordered it with the larger Fan with solenoid. I live just south of Kansas City. So far I am pleased with the performance of the Shaver 165. I have burned about three cords of Hedge and Locust mix, since starting up the stove in October. We have had the coldest winter since building our log home in 2001. In the past the electric bill was 600 to 700 per month now its 178 to 190. This winter I estimate we would have had 900 to 1000 light bills if we did not have the outdoor stove. I am going to spend more time looking at the changes I can make to the 165 to improve it. I will add the a dry well thermostat before start up next winter. Thanks for all the info on this site. I will report what my total cost to heat my house after the season is over and compare it to previous years.
