Heatmor / Re: Forum is pretty slow
« on: February 11, 2019, 05:20:16 AM »
Too bad there's so much negativity - makes it hard for people to get reliable information about furnaces and installs.  That's why I chose a stove based on what was running in my area and the dealer's reputation.

Equipment / Re: Chain Freeze

Yup, happens to me when cutting in -20 or so. Usually when setting the saw down though and the snow freezes to the warm bar/chain. I find running the saw at speed for a few seconds out of the wood between cuts helps. I run stihl medium bar oil in a Husqvarna 61 and a stihl 026.

My Heatmor has 377 gallons of water storage with a small fire box and a 30 degree differential. I think the large water jacket makes the stove more efficient (longer burns and fewer cycles per day). The downside in mild weather like this with a newer house is the fan might not cycle for 6 hours or more. But, it allows you to light one small fire a day and use the thermal storage once the wood is gone. This is handy in the shoulder seasons.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: long sidearm heat exchangers
« on: November 08, 2015, 08:30:00 PM »
I preheat the water entering my electric water tank using a 20 plate. It will provide endless hot water, as long as you use it. I leave the electric element on to maintain temperature when we aren't using very much. I was told that a sidearm wouldn't give the same capacity, but it would maintain temperature when not drawing hot water.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: This will get you thinking!!!

Loosing heat is only bad if it happens in spaces that aren't heated. I've got 70' of logstor and the rest of my plumbing is in heated areas. The radiant heating from the circulating water is a cheap way to heat my house and garage. I see your point though if it were a long run in poor quality pipe.

Green Valley Heating in London, Ontario has lots at around $15/foot Canadian. Two hours from Port Huron and you can take advantage of the exchange. You could also pick up a clean used 200 for $4500 and bring it back to the land of the EPA

Heatmor / Re: powder coat problems - 200SSRII
« on: September 03, 2015, 07:17:06 PM »
The repair only took half a day and it was pretty impressive how easily the stove comes apart for service. I like the idea of spray foam insulation, but the bats make it easy to service. The ash auger tube, for example, comes off with a couple bolts only. It's not a high tech gasser, but it's still phase 2 and is easy to maintain.

Heatmor / powder coat problems - 200SSRII
« on: September 02, 2015, 07:30:57 PM »
My stove was installed in December 2014 and this summer I noticed that the black powder coated parts (doors, roof, corners) were fading. Closer inspection revealed rust in the dimples of the textured powder coat. I contacted my dealer (green Valley heating in Granton, ON) who were excellent and let me know there was was brief issue with Heatmor's painting process. They ordered new parts and replaced almost every exterior piece under warranty. Just a heads u if you notice the same. Overall the stove is excellent - heats 1800 square feet, 600 square feet of garage, and domestic hot water on 11 face cord in a cold winter. The massive water jacket and big differential means some Re lighting but the efficiency is great.

Regulations / Re: Non EPA phase 2 boilers from Canada
« on: February 23, 2015, 02:44:57 PM »
It's not really a topic of discussion on a national level here but I have seen some municipalities introduce by-laws regulating outdoor wood furnaces. Although a lot of our laws tend to follow changes in the US, I can't see conventional boilers being banned across the country for a while considering the influence of farmers and rural residents in Northern areas. If I was a US resident I would take advantage of the low Canadian dollar and come on up and pick one up.

Electronics / Re: ERV/HRV Question
« on: December 24, 2014, 11:38:21 AM »
I just had a heatmor response installed and I also have an hrv unit that uses the furnace fan. I didn't think of it before hand but it does generate a lot of unwanted heat if the hrv us set to a low humidity level.
