Portage & Main / Re: Ontario
« on: March 10, 2018, 02:36:34 PM »
On my 4th season with a BL 3444 heating my 2600 sq ft ranch house +basement, also a 4car attached garage with 11ft ceiling. I plan to build a barn and also heat it. It’ a great stove with no problems. I really like that you can unbolt the water jacket for future replacement. Good stove if you ask me.

Portage and Maine seems to be a really good company, how many years have you had your ML30?

Just curious, what made you buy another portage and Maine if you only got 4 years out of the ML 30?.. I would think the should last longer than that..........

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: GEO Thermal vs. Wood Boiler
« on: December 10, 2015, 05:23:18 PM »
Thanks for the reply's, makes me feel better about my choice. There is a lot of lazy people anymore, and having a wood boiler also keeps you in shape. There's just Somethin about heating your home with wood in my mind., and I dont mind how hot my wife keeps the house, and she loves that so that's a plus haha.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / GEO Thermal vs. Wood Boiler
« on: December 10, 2015, 04:27:15 AM »
I live in central Ohio, and just built a new house. 2600 sq ft with full basement (not finished yet) and a 1000 SQ ft attached garage with 11' ceilings in it that I'm heating. 2x6 walls and good windows. It is sealed up tight. I have had several people ask me why I didn't put a Geo Thermal in instead of a wood boiler. The reason I bought the wood boiler is because we have access to pretty much as much free wood as I need. I live in 20 acres so I had plenty of land to put the Geo in. I guess my question is should I have gone with the geo thermal? I'm young and enjoy cutting wood and doin the work.

Portage & Main / Re: Ash depth on BL
« on: March 06, 2015, 08:37:16 PM »
I keep mine fairly low, but I also have OCD and rake my ashes/coals before I load it. I made a rake (looks like a bent pitch fork) and it works great. You can keep the ashes low as long as you load your wood consumption right depending on the temps and raking them often.

I was in the same boat as you when I was looking at these boilers. My thought was you can never go big enough,.. (With anything).. I'm glad I bought the 3444 even tho they told me the 2840 was big enough.. Like you said when the temps warm up outside I just barely fill it, but when it gets cold I load it up.. I feel like they should be more specific when they sell these units because there numbers are off when they say these 2840's can heat up to 4000 sq ft...

Ya for sure.. I am going to get new hinges tomorrow.. But I'm going to put grade 5 bolts in it.. Not self tappers. The door is a lot heavier than it looks, I'm supposed they put these cheap hinges on the nice stoves.

Portage & Main / Front door broke off on my BL 3444
« on: January 29, 2015, 04:59:44 PM »
So tonight I went to load my BL 3444, and as I was loading it my hinges broke off the the outside insulated door..... It is a little breezy but nothing that I would of thought to be concerned about the door.... These hinges are cheap.. Anybody else have this problem yet? And any ideas of what to do?

Was that a bad unit? Or something you did wrong? there is no point in buy a boiler if we have to replace it every 5 years.
