Title: question on cutting on shares
Post by: pointer80 on September 10, 2018, 08:59:21 AM
Hello all,  My neighbor had roughly 100 trees taken out by loggers and give me all the tops.  It's mostly red oak.  I was going to try to find someone to cut on shares.  I was curious how cutting on shares works?  Load for load, two to one etc?  Thanks all.

It depends on them.  Personally, I've been offered to share cuts on a pile of actual logs.  He offered me 1 to 2.  I get 2, he gets one.  I passed.  I get enough wood elsewhere, I have no interest in doing work for someone else's wood.

That's about how I feel. Several years ago I would monitor craigslist year round and quickly go after anything free if it wasn't off the edge of a cliff. Often times folks would save my number and eventually the wood called me. Most everything gets turned down now unless it's premium hardwood on my daily path to work.

So in the end, depends on accessibility, convenience, and how much work is involved, and the person.

My understanding is that if a hardwood is free and it is acquired, processed, dried, and sold, you'll clear around $5/hr of your hard labor. I figured it up once and that wasn't far off. If it weren't for the enjoyment of sniffing fresh cut wood and a little exercise I wouldn't do it at all.

Question is..............is your neighbor ok with your idea?
