Central Boiler / thermocouple replacement
« on: March 12, 2023, 05:22:53 AM »
Thermocouple has been giving some low temps, ie 190 . the reaction chamber has no ash and the fire is strong with a good bed of coals. So to take out the thermocouple do I remove the refractory in the fire box to get at it? I didn't see the mastic tape in the air box cover mentioned in the manual .

Central Boiler / CIRCLATOR PUMP REPLACEMENT
« on: April 07, 2022, 02:34:46 PM »
After 8 years the Taco 009 circulator died. I am looking to find an energy efficient replacement. The height it has to pump is around 14 feet, boiler to the basement. I use a heat exchanger so I don't need to pump up three stories. Anyone know of a good pump for this?

There is an interesting you tube that explains why  OWB should burn hot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_7BPKexaoI   not sure if this link will work, Me and technology agree to disagree.  the title is
The phenomenon of corrosion into the gasification boilers

I guess the average size would be like a 2-3. It is hard to remember that this fire is only going as needed, the old school me is so used to wood stoves that burn all the time.
Don't get me wrong I have some big pieces I toss in if we are going to have a cold night. Some of them are ends that I toss aside as I cut if they are to short.

I get away with long idle time but I also split wood to small pieces. Like you Roger  I find that it reignites on a bead of coals allot quicker. I am sure I have some creosote built up in my primary tube so my next clean will be the 1st full shutdown cleaning this year .  For the creosote in the corners I use an ice chipper and the" Wonder Bar" that came with it.

I have the 1450 so I am not sure how the 750 fire box is. I used to wait until I had a lower reaction chamber temp and let the fire go out overnight and clean it then. Now I go in the reaction chamber 3-4 weeks and shovel it out with the fire going. I kill the power for a few min but thats it. My heat exchanger tubes are  clean with just some fly ash  Like Roger I do a full clean  mid season. So far this year I have a 30 min pulse cycle that lasts 50 seconds. My heat exchanger tubes are  clean with just some fly ash

Roger:
My wife uses it allot as well. I am not about to call her an old fart. She does get the town alerts from it and can find out who has power after the storm. But you are talking with someone who just texted this year for the 1st time

Mine goes from $100 to $140 when I light the boiler. Something about spinning a few pumps and a draft fan all the time raises the bill I guess.

Mine jumps up as well. The 009 taco circulator running 24/7 does it.

I'm as guilty as anyone here. I used this site when I needed advice and now come here once in a great while. This summer I came here and tried to sign in with the user name and password but got a message that I was timed out. Only when I signed in up top did I get in. I originally thought this site was gone. Allot of sites are having the same problem with lack of active users. Sign of the times? I am a dinosaur, I never have used snap chat or any of the other stuff out there. I was told that Facebook is for old farts and not used by most young people. Good thing I don't have a facebook  account.

Yikes Roger

The idea of running the oil sucks. Are you going to drain it down or leave it? That storm had me worried so I shut the breaker at the house off until It was all over and the power was up and stable. Just started to run it 2 weeks ago, ran the water tests and all is well. 13 cord of wood and two bottles of Ashtrol this year. Hope to only use 7 of the 13 cord and have some for next year, 1.5 cord was left from last year.

Good luck and I hope you are up and running soon.

What pump do you have now?
I have the Taco 007 now.
Is that similar to the Grundfos Alfa?  The Grundfos Alfa does the exact same thing, variable speed on demand.  Not only am I hoping that it'll save a bit money but when all of the zones call for heat, it'll ramp up to meet the demand.  Roger

Yea from the youtube  I saw on it it is variable speed on demand. They claim it will self purge any air pockets or shut down if it gets any clogs. In the video they talk about some energy savings rebate for it, I need to see if that is true. I have a heat exchanger in the basement separating the house from the boiler so I don't need a pump running at max speed 24/7. The good part is it is the same size as the 007 .

duramax - Those bars are to prevent the firewood from resting against the air holes blocking the air from doing it's job.  Roger

Good to know, I can now take them out so I can scrape the sides better. I just make a quick pass every other day with an ice chipper.

I split most of my wood for it smaller for two reasons, the first is it fires up quicker with smaller pieces and the best one of all is my wife helps keeping it going and she hates the weight of the larger pieces. I do have some bigger stuff for long cold nights and some of that is the twisted knot filled stuff not worth splitting.

Anyone try this out yet or know someone who does? It looks to be an energy saving pump, variable speed on demand. My electric bill goes up $30 or more every month when the boiler is on.

I will admit that I had no idea what it was, I didn't need the gas ignition. What the heck are the 2 bars hanging on the sides of the fire box? I assumed that they are like sacrificial rods in a water heater?

You are dead on with that Rodger. Late October or early November sounds about right. We still use the Vermont castings to take the chill out in early fall. I chucked some of the smaller split pieces aside  for that, plus some still left from last year but not allot. I still have more to scrounge but that will be for next year. I hope to have a stock of wood aged for a year for once next year.
