Horizontal/Vertical log splitters
« on: July 10, 2016, 02:20:49 PM »

I have a Speeco 3pt hitch at work (nonprofit). One of my board members is in the market for a new vertical splitter and is thinking of going in on halves with us. I told him you have a range from chinese to USA made commercial grade (Range: Cheap to expensive).

Brands I have seen:
Black Diamond (Big R/Farm & Fleet): Apparently a company owned by an ex-Speeco employee. Price: $1,499 37T/Kohler engine
Ram Splitter
Forest King (TSC): Price: $1,999.99 25T/Kohler engine
American:
Iron & Oak:
Timber Wolf:
Dirty Hand: Lowe's price: $1,399 or $1,898
Swisher: Lowe's

He said he was looking at the $1,200-$1,300 range. I think he is under priced on current market price for a H/V splitter. ($1,500-$2,500).

What would you suggest and estimated Price for long term quality? Maybe even a company that gives nonprofit discount (I get a 5% discount at Lowe's).

Speedco           In Michigan you can buy a Speedco at the farm stores for about $1200   O.T.D.             22 ton I think    Sometimes they run sales and their about $1000 plus tax.

It all depends on your needs.  If you are doing any serious splitting, I wouldn't recommend a 22 ton.  I split 15 cords a year and I run a 27 ton Dirty Hands Tool splitter with the 6.5 horse Kohler.  I wanted to get the 28 ton with the 9 horse Kohler, but I got the 27 at 50% off on a Menards black friday deal.  Couldn't pass that up at all!  Regular price was $1,400.  I got it for $800 with a $100 rebate.

So, I've been running the DHT 27 ton for almost 3 years now.  Not a single issue.  It sips gas to the point that I'm glad I didn't get the 9 horse.  I also have not found a crotchy piece of wood I couldn't split.  I have gotten hung up several times on my cousins 22 ton.

I had my eye on a 28 ton Oregon.  The Oregon is just a SpeeCo with different paint and stickers.  I looked into SpeeCo and the seem like a quility product.  They also make the "Country Tuff" brand at Orescheln Farm and Home.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd be looking at a Timber Wolf or some other comparable commercial quality.  I hate buying big box, but I'm happy with my DHT.   A Kohler engine was a must for me.  I'm not a fan of Briggs and Stratton.

Service after the sale is something so I checked my local Amish chainsaw dealer. He sells Iron & Oak. We ordered a 22Ton H/V. Get a small nonprofit discount from factory too so that is nice. I also added the log cradle.

The dealer has the exact same model for rent and their own use. He has never steered me wrong and has given advice on the right tool for our needs whether a chainsaw, leaf blower or now hopefully a log splitter.

Hope you got a good price. I saw where Tractor Supply has theirs on sale which they call "Country Line" I believe, basically a Speeco brand and I like several of their features. The splitting rail makes a cradle and they use Kohler engines at least on their high ton units. Their 22 and 25 ton units are on sale for $999 including another $90 of accessories. Their 35 ton unit is on sale for $1599.
