EGR 250 consumables
« on: June 19, 2017, 12:37:55 PM »

I have been looking hard at the Portage and Main EGR 250 and noticed some notes in the user manual about consumable items.

The nozzle is a consumable item. The life expectancy of a nozzle cannot be predicted by usage or
specified period.

The refractories are consumable items. The life expectancy of refractories cannot be predicted by
usage or specified period. Damage, deterioration and cracking of all refractories (heat treated fire
brick) are excluded from the warranty.

Is this something I should worry about?
What is a realistic amount of time these should last?
Has anyone ever replaced them?
What kind of cost is associated with them?
Are these something you can make yourself if the company stops offering them?

Thanks

That’s typical of any gasser or stoves that use a lot of firebrick in em. Some are easier to change than others, some last longer than others. Biggest secret to em is don’t be rough with em when cleaning, especially if they are hot. Only time I ever use a poker in my G200 is I run around the outside in the top burn chamber to make sure everything is loose, if I have any crud around or in the nozzle i use a piece of wood to clean it out.

We do have a member that is/was casting nozzles for the P&M 250 optimizers.

Some guys on the hearth forum have made stainless nozzle liners after the nozzle wears wider over the years. Seems to work well. Just a drop in piece to replace every few years. Eventually burns out but it's fairly cheap.
A p&m dealer or the factory should be able to show you how to replace a nozzle brick. The G series nozzle lifts out. I haven't seen an EGR brick.

I agree, be gentle and they'll last a lot longer.

Did P&M ever get the EGR 250 EPA approved?

I have not seen anything that says they have on either the EPA website or the Portage and Main literature.

How stringent are the governing bodies that control this?
Is it federal or state? In my case Indiana.
If I were to purchase the EGR 250 without it being certified would I be breaking any laws? If so are there any real repurctions? Susceptible to fines or just a stern warning not to do it again from an official?

Morfen, thanks for the pm, sorry for being so short but since my breakup with HeatMaster I have taken a regular job that has some crazy hours involved. I believe that the P and M did pass but was dismal on the numbers and should be retested, the similarities between it and the Polar are only skin deep and part of the reason that I personally sell them is ease of operation and fit/ finish.

The EPA certification and regs are federal, and apply in any state. I think Indiana has their own state regs too? Mlappin would know.

I haven't heard of any EPA enforcement but I wouldn't want to be the first.

Indiana basically took the EPA law and passed it as their own, so even if the EPA law was ever repealed Indiana’s would still be in effect, I also believe your only allowed to use a OWB from October 1st to May 1st. My guess somebody somewhere was burning green wood or garbage in one upwind of an Indiana House members home.

Ditto, haven’t heard of any actual fines being levied against anyone, wouldn’t want to be the guy they decide to make an example of either. I feel for our dealers or a dealer of any brand in Michigan. Michigan passed a resolution not to enforce the EPA regs, that doesn’t negate the federal regs, it just states a Michigan employee won’t enforce em. Unlike some believe, it doesn’t make said regulations null and void, an actual EPA employee still could. If the EPA or feds really want to make Michigan toe the line all they have to do is threaten to with hold federal funds for non compliance, then Michigan will be doing a Sig Heil right quick.
