Fire Wood / Re: length of wood

I try to cut 24" +/- 6".  I use the very long pieces (36") for cold nights when I need it packed tight.  24" pieces toward the front work better and wastes less wood.

I did the exact same thing a few years ago.  Don't pack the insulation too tight.  Not sure if the bubble foil insulation helps much, but it should some as the doors are pretty thin.

It probably doesn't help but I went under-footing and came up thru floor -> I also did this before all the cement was poured

I do like image that jwood posted.

In regards to PEX and sunlight, a definate NO-NO; must keep stored out of direct sunlight.

I did the same thing.  If I was installing after the house was up & would core thru the foundation wall below grade and find a way to pipe it thru the house.

Tamping in sand should be ok as long as the area is small and not under a main loading point (next to window headers or something).  If you really want to be sure, use flowable grout (concrete).

If you can core thru the foundation wall it might be better.  How deep are your footings?

I have a 20 plate DHW flat plate and a 60 plate exchanger inline and no problems.  I did install valves and bypass for problems or maintenance.  On the 20 plate I leave the bypass valve partially open so some bypass can happen and prevent back pressure.

8 cords in shed.  12 cords in stacks.  Lots of dead elms and a couple dead oaks to cut this fall.  Lots of box elder to cut back this winter.  I hope to be 2 years ahead by mid November.

If this winter is bad I am prepared. Over 1 year ahead right now.  I was prepared last winter, and now I am catching back up to the 2 year ahead plan.

When did Heatmor start using a stainless chimney?  Looks like a nice setup.

I cut box elders like that all the time.  Just like others have said you need to make a small bottom cut or notch.  Otherwise it will split and hang up and be hard to saw off not to mention dangerous.  Sometimes they barber chair or spin so watch out.  I cut them at waist height so I can see what is happening and am standing ready to run.

Be careful and have an escape route.

Yes it is 110v.  I used mine to switch a relay to 24v and wired that up to turn the fan on in the forced air furnace which was simpler for me than wiring direct.  It could be done a few ways.

It is worth setting up though.  The first time you forget the ash plug, leave the door ajar, or have another air leak you will be glad you did.

Looks good to me.  You actually have a 14/2 with ground wire (2 conductors and 1 ground).  That is what I have for my pump.  I have a factory plug end with 5 ft of wire and wired it up to the pump.  It is stranded also - I would recommend stranded for that as it gets plugged in and moved when replacing or working on the pump or unplugging.

Attached is a picture similar to what I think you have.  Yours may not have insulation on the ground wire which is ok.

I just shut mine down Monday.  There can be more problems in warmer weather with overheating.  It still sounds like your aquastat has issues or you have a leak.  Either it is boiling off or leaking.  I had a small leak at a threaded fitting - no water dripping, just some white mineral buildup, but was loosing 2-5 gallons a week.  A lot more water than you think can leak from a very small leak.

It was cold last week and got warm on the weekend.  I was gone fishing and my wife loaded it up maybe a little higher than I would have.  The small flap that opens when the outer door is open had some creosote on it and wasn't shutting all the way.  She called saying why was the furnace fan going - hot in here!  No harm done, the overheat aquastat worked and easy fix, but still I don't like having very much wood in in warmer weather just in case.

Heatmor / Warped Grates
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:35:53 AM »
I just cleaned out the Heatmor 200 yesterday and the grates are really getting warped.  They have been slowly getting worse.  Now they are about 1 to 2 inches lower in the middle and cracking.

At what point should they be replaced?  Anyone else dealing with this?

Fire Wood / Re: White Oak?

Looks like pin or black oak.  Very similar to red oak.  I have lots of pin and it can be a little stringier than red, but still great stuff.  Smell can be variable, although usually smells better than dog poo in my neck of the woods.

I have burnt it. It doesn't have the btu' of oak, but will keep you warm.  If you have easy access use it.  I mix some elm or oak in with it to hold coals better.

Fire Wood / Re: Not selling any wood
« on: March 28, 2014, 12:23:15 PM »
I tried my hand at selling some this winter as I have a surplus of dry oak split.  I didn't get any calls for 3 weeks until we had a 12" snow with 4 ft snowdrifts and a cold front predicted.   The calls I got wanted me to come down on price.  I was asking $180 for a 6.5 ft pickup load (advertised as just over 1/3 cord).  I didn't budge since it has too much value to me and my time.  Not to mention plowing a path to get it.  I will stick to selling a load here and there to friends or neighbors.
