From what I’ve heard, the new environmentally friendly coolant used in near everything now is also rather corrosive so it eats the pumps up from the inside out.

It seems the quality of appliances has really gone downhill the last 10 years or so. We're on our 3rd washing machine in 10 years. When the last one broke 2 years ago, I paid the money for a good "commercial grade" unit and its already making noises it shouldnt.

Ayuh,....    I know I'm alittle different, but I Fix my broken stuff, insteada buyin' more stuff,.....

My 20-something Amana frig startin' actin' all weird like, 'n died last summer,...
Took me abit of meterin', 'n testin', but I found the problem with the help of google,...
A couple days later, the package at the door, throw in the part, then figure out where all the bits, pieces, 'n screws go,...

Newest appliance I've got in 3 houses is 15, 20 years old,....
An electric stove at camp, which the clock don't work, 'n the oven is 345°, no more, 'n no less,....
I was gonna fix it, but the panel board cost thrice as much as the stove,...

Deb loves it, or I'da found another by now,...  somethin' older, analog, with switches, not printed circuit boards,....

Anymore on major appliance you must buy the extended warranty. Makes me think the manufacturers and the companies offering the warranties are in bed together.

I know this might be hard to beleive but we have in the kitchen a 1927 Genseral Electric refrigerator i bought at an auction 35yrs ago for $40. Its been running every day since it was new. I was told that it pre dates freon and runs on amonia. Compressor is on top. Also have a 50's model GE in the the garage.

Well, I know this will be hard to believe, the 1927 model GE fridge died about 2 weeks ago. On a whim my bride had a guy come and look at it. Said he'd never seen anything like it. (young guy) but he would see what he could find out. Now the hard to believe part. He said that he found a manual for it online, and a company some where in New York, that that has parts and will repair the compressor if need be. He said that the original lead wire seal was still on the metal box that contains a start relay. He ordered the relay. Delivery about 2 weeks. I'll keep y'all posted. Will send pics if I can figure out how to do it.

I fixed our 8 year old stainless frig with the frig on top and freezer on the bottom. Bought all parts off amazon and did it for under $350. if you know someone with the car gauges and vacuum pump the new ones use 134a some soldering with silver solder and your back in business.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if it is cheaper replacing them every 5-10 years than paying the electricity on something that old.

RSI, Thanks Im glad you brought it up, I don't have a meter, will try to borrow one, but just a little with the numbers. My 90 yr old Dad has always said "liers figure but figures NEVER lie. I paid $ 45.00 for it 35 years ago, =  $1.29/yr.
I remember when we bought it, a used unit,  clean and in good working order was about $150, new $250, neither of which we had. If every 5 yrs. we had bought a good used unit at $150 x 7 = $1050/35= $30/yr. these numbers are extremely conservative Coolidge quoted $1800 for a new one. It lookes as though it might be a push, I'm sure that the cost of operation is signifcantly higher than the yearly cost. I'm not an electical power kind of guy but what would the monthly cost of operation on a newer unit be?
