General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Titanium steel
« on: January 23, 2022, 03:48:00 PM »
There's a lot of talk about the benefits of stainless in boilers and I agree to 409 the way to go.

Where does it come from?  Titanium is a part of the formulation of 409. Notice that China is the main producer of titanium.
China produces 230 times the titanium as the US. Canada 8 times more.   Where does our ' Made in US' stainless come from?

Mill in Kentucky boasts of 90% recycled, mill in Alabama mill 80% recycled. They 'make' 60% of all stainless in US and both are foreign owned. All a mill has to do is roll and form it and can label it 'Made in USA' regardless of origin.
Could not find any maker of virgin stock in US.

Question: Is 'Made in USA' a quality thing?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Heat loss, underground piping
« on: January 17, 2022, 11:32:08 AM »
Could someone verify my calculation; If I'm pumping 10 gpm and have 6 degree heat loss in no load round trip, 150 heating days per year.  38,000,000 btu loss or about 1.5 cords wood. Anywhere close?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Electric bill
« on: November 08, 2019, 04:50:16 AM »
Got up to a cold outside wind blowing and needing to get out and skin a couple deer. Procrastinating, and opened my electric bill for last month:$88.52. House and shop. Pay more for just about everything else. Wish I could hook up my medical bills to this furnace. Even pay more for phone.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Clothes dryer hookup
« on: March 14, 2018, 09:58:25 AM »
Anyone using a dryer on an outdoor furnace? Ideas on hooking one up?

We have had a major wind storm in the east with a lot of power outages. How would you hook a electric furnace or a heatpump air handler into a generator sub panel if all you have is a 30amp panel and a 5000 watt generator (which could pull the fan only), but the air handler is run with one or two 60amp breakers in the main panel. All we want to do is run the fan and the outdoor furnace to get some heat.

HeatMaster / G2 or G4?
« on: August 11, 2017, 03:52:05 AM »
Have a log house to install a new unit in. It's finished log inside and out, no insulation except in ceiling. 40'x72' main floor with 12' ceiling on main floor. Top floor 10' ceiling. Will be heated and cooled with 3 1200 cfm units, two on lower floor. Top unit will not be hooked to outdoor furnace' used mainly for cooling. Also hook up hot water. Very open design house, 22+' to top. Also attached  3 car garage  not being heated now, but who knows in future.
Those of you that have run a G4, is this big enough to put a decent pull on that unit or is this still G2 territory?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / pressurizing outdoor furnace
« on: March 07, 2017, 10:03:59 AM »
Elsewhere in this forum there was a discussion about pressurizing an outdoor furnace. this unit was and almost blew up. Pex water line blew in house and flooded basement. Made a round water jacket out of a square one, bulging the sides and pulling the roof down. I am told the Insurance was told it was a faulty water line and paid for damages as well as a new furnace.

Regulations / Trumps EPA

Wonder what the future looks like to you with Scott Pruitt heading the EPA? How will it effect the Outdoor Furnace Industry if any? Any chance for 2020 standards or even what we have now?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Cheap basement heater
« on: December 21, 2016, 12:48:30 PM »
Wondering what you guys do to get heat in hard to reach places? This customer had a heat pump in his attic that we tied into for the upstairs heat. Downstairs was electric baseboard. We made up this 460 cfm blower with 4" ducts and it heated up the basement really nice. Really hot air!
But maybe you have better ideas?
Panel rads took up wall space and were double the price. I dislike copper baseboard, seems to get in the way.
Regular ducts were not an option, not enough room.

HeatMaster / New R&D chip burner
« on: December 21, 2016, 12:29:39 PM »
Thought you guys might enjoy some pictures of a chip burner Heatmaster is testing. Burning chips out of a grinder so far, potential for all sorts of biomass. Heating two 12,000 sq ft shops (24,000 sq ft total), 24' tall. No blockages after several months burning, feed system seems to work very well. 500,000 btu.
Not available to public- yet.
