How many grates?
« on: July 04, 2013, 08:59:22 PM »

Everything that I have read about the H-4 non shaker, has 6 grates with 2  C-channel and one I-beam. The used one I bought has 2  I-beams and 3 grates. It was made in 1996. Any body else have this set up, Is the older ones made like this? ???

My H4 is a 1991 and it too has the 3 grate system with two I beams. Not sure when they switched to the other system.

Mine has the 2 I beams so I am hoping I can go with the 3 grate system. For as much as they are per grate I cant see going with the 6 grate system. But I think most new ones come with 3

I have been burning two seasons so far with mine that I bought used.(its 22 years old at this point!) I have broken two grates in two seasons. When I found out how much it was to buy new ones I was appalled at the price! I don't know if you weld or know any one that does but for $35 in one inch solid square bar you can make your own. I just went down to my local steel supplier and picked up I think 10 feet which is a just a little more than you will need. I just took the measurements from the cast grates, cut up the bar and welded it up with my little 120 Hobart. They hold up much better than the cast does.

Cool idea Hondaracer. I Have a Hobart 140 I bought last year and learning some welding tricks. Great welder!

The biggest thing I have learned was not to let the ash get so high that it touches the grates.  That will cause it to get too hot and warp the grates.  You can also flip them over through the season which can make them last longer.
