Central Boiler / Selling my house
« on: March 04, 2021, 01:58:50 PM »
Hi all - The subject title says it all, I'm selling my house.  The town in which I was raised and the house in which I have lived in all my nearly 60 years, I have pretty much been taxed out of it.  I'm looking ahead a couple of years to retirement and I will not be able to handle the tax burden alone so in January I decided to put it on the market.  On March 26th the new owners will be taking possession of it along with the OWB, I'm not taking with me.  Anyone know the procedure how to turn ownership of the OWB over to the buyers so CB knows I no longer am the owner?  The new owners seem very intrigued about it and want to learn all they can to operate it safely.  Thanks,  Roger

Central Boiler / Extra parts; handy
« on: January 10, 2021, 10:42:54 AM »
I can't stress enough the importance of having extra parts on hand for your model of OWB.  Last evening around 6:00pm I put wood in my CB Edge 550 HD Titanium for the next 12 hours.  Around 6:45pm I decided for giggles check to see how she was doing via the firestar using wifi.  The water was having trouble getting up to temperature and the temperatures in the reaction chamber was having trouble rising as well.  SO, outside I go to investigate hoping it's a simple fix.  I opened the firebox door and had rather nice fire going but the water temp wasn't rising.  So I took the poker and made sure that nothing was restricting the air flow between the charge tube and reaction chamber.  It was at that point that I realized the combustion fan was making some really weird noises.  After opening the door to the area where the fan is located I noticed it wasn't rotating that well.  Off to the basement in the house where I store my extra OWB parts.  I removed the old fan and replaced it with the new one.  What a difference that made.  The reaction chamber temps immediately started rising as well as the water in the OWB.  After watching it for a few minutes I went back inside and relaxed.  It's been running fine ever since.  The operators manual states to oil the fan every spring during the spring cleaning.  Well, I forgot that part.  I'm guessing oil is important to some motors.  :)   Roger

Central Boiler / Firing her up this week.
« on: October 11, 2020, 10:14:51 AM »
Hi all - I have the week off this week from work so I have decided to fire to the CB Classic Edge 550 HD, as soon as I get some other work out of the way.  This old house isn't as warm as I like it (lower 60's, prefer mid 70's) so I'm going to fire her up to break the chill.  I won't miss hearing the oil burner running to heat the DHW either.   So, off to another season of OWB heat!  :)   Roger

Central Boiler / She's tucked in for the summer
« on: May 06, 2020, 02:39:24 PM »
Well, I spent about 5 hours this morning shutdown and cleaning my CB Edge 550 HD Titanium for the summer.  She wasn't too bad with regards to creosote build up, I expected worse.  I had a run of bad wood that I needed to get through before having access to the quality stuff.  I spent more time cleaning the air channels that I cared to do but it still was faster cleaning them on the 550 than it was on my E-Classic 1400.  I'll need to replace a couple items before next heating season though, a rope gasket that goes around the fusion chamber and one of the air channels panels, it's the one below the fire door.  For some she was all warped and the holes won't line up.  I'll save my pennies through the summer to the new one.  It'll take me a couple of days to get used to not going outside twice a day to put in her.  But I have a feeling by the time Friday gets here I will be used to not going outdoors.  This is by far the longest I've gone into the spring with it heating my house and DHW.  I think I shut her down last year in early April.  I think I put fire in it in early to mid Oct.  If calculations are right I think I went through almost 6 cord of wood.  There are 2 factors for not burning to much wood; 1st - mild winter. I think we had 1 or 2 nights of sub zero temps.  2nd - I've put a lot of insulation in the walls and ceiling over the years.  That makes a difference in comfort.

Have a great summer everyone!  Stay safe!

General Discussion / Home Electrical Question
« on: January 08, 2020, 02:16:30 PM »
Hi all - My home is a 1930'sish post and beam style home.  In the living room and dining room the ceiling beams are exposed.  There's approx. 4 inches of foam insulation between the beams leaving about 4 inches of the beam surface exposed.  Presently the only way to have light in the living room is with 2 small tables lamps.  When I am hosting a gathering I like to have more light in the living room but I'm unable to do so due to only having 2 small tables lamps.  Anyone know how I can attach lights to the ceiling/beams without it looking too gaudy and out of place?  I'd like to have any surface mounted raceway blend in with the color of the beams.  Your suggestions are most welcome.  Thanks.  Roger

I want to take a moment to wish everyone who happens to stick their heads in this forum a very Merry Christmas before all of the festivities take us away.  I will not be online much tomorrow due to attending church tomorrow morning and then spending the day with one of my older brothers and his wife.  May God shine his light upon you all.  Roger

Central Boiler / Received an Alarm
« on: December 05, 2019, 04:41:14 PM »
This morning around 1:00am I received an alarm on my cell phone saying that the Edge 550 HD had lost communication and that I haven't received any updates for a bit.  So I got dressed and went outside to make sure the OWB was still heating the house, it was, so I disabled the alarm on my cell phone and went back to bed.  When it was time to put wood in it at 6:00am I turned off the controller and waited for a few seconds and turned it back on, it made no difference, I wasn't receiving any updates.  When I got to work I emailed Tyler, the IT guy at CB and stated my problem.  He checked everything on their end and he said everything was operating as it should.  He recommended that I reboot the cable modem and report back to him my findings.  So when I got home I rebooted the cable modem and I am now receiving updates as I should.  Something so simple that I should have been able to figure it out on my own but didn't.  Oh well...  Roger

Central Boiler / Fried power supply
« on: November 01, 2019, 12:24:28 PM »
Hey all, Around 3:15 this morning we experienced 3 power surges, the power failed a short time later and the emergency generator took over.  Following CB's online troubleshooting guide and following the schematic printed on the panel where the pump is located, I was able to confirm the power supply had indeed died.  From looking at the power supply I could see where a component had "exploded" and left a black smudge on the protective cage surrounding the power supply and a nice black smudge on the insulation too.  My dealer has a new one coming from CB.  It should be in mid-week next week.  Until then, I have to listen to the oil burner run.  I guess it could be worse.  Roger

General Discussion / My new to me ride
« on: July 21, 2019, 03:34:58 AM »
For as long as I've been riding motorcycles, I've always wanted a Honda Goldwing.  It's considered the "Cadillac" of the motorcycles.  I happened to be scanning craigslist last week when I saw dealer in my state had a 2012 for sale.  I know I can't afford a new one, the price is stupid, out of my range.  This 2012 only has under 15,000 miles, essentially she's not even broke in yet, with a price tag of $12,500.00.  I decided to call the dealer to get a feel of the condition of the bike.  The sale rep said she's in excellent condition.  I put a little money down to hold her until I could get there to see her in person.  I wasn't disappointed, the paint job sparkles, it's color is candy apple red, absolutely stunning.  So on Friday with the help of my nephew we trailered her home.  I hope the pic came through.  Roger

General Discussion / Sad scene
« on: June 23, 2019, 07:32:16 AM »
I heard on the news yesterday that 7 marines while on a group ride in northern part of NH were killed when a pick up truck collided with them on Rte 2, 3 other's were injured and transported to the local hospital.  The investigation is still ongoing.  Please keep them and their families in your prayers and thoughts.  Also, lets not forget the young man (23 yrs old) who was driving the pickup and pray that it wasn't due to distracted driving whether it be from reaching for something or texting, plus his family.  Everyday as I get on my motorcycle this is always in the back of my mind, that something like this could easily happen to me.  Roger

General Discussion / 17HP Kawasaki Twin No Spark
« on: June 02, 2019, 03:41:14 AM »
I have a year 2000 Kawasaki twin motor with no spark at both plugs, she turns over very well and has plenty of gas.  I have unplugged the shorting wire from the coils thinking there's a problem with the shorting circuit that shuts her down when the ignition key is turned to the off position. I have checked the engine oil; it has a safety shutdown switch if the oil gets too low, oil is full.  I have checked all of the safety switches I can find and by-passed them, that made no difference.  Any ides?  Roger

General DIY remodeling without Hydronics / Question about Lumber
« on: May 19, 2019, 07:15:35 AM »
Why is it every time I buy lumber from one of my big box stores the lumber will twist, warp, etc... like a corkscrew?  No matter how I try to get best from them, after a day or 2 of sitting around waiting to be used, it will be warped to the point of it being nearly impossible to use.  Roger
