Central Boiler / Re: big chunks of wood
« on: January 12, 2012, 02:35:11 PM »
I keep all mine in round i can. But like Ridgekid mentioned I usually put them on top of some splits. Laying splits on bottom makes it easier to slide them in instead of trying to push them through coals. The only time mine has gone out is when i forgot to turn fan back on. But they should be seasoned good first. Takes rounds several months longer to dry.

Shaver Furnace / Re: Shaver auto dampers
« on: January 10, 2012, 03:36:16 PM »
Hi lugnut
can you send me the info and pictures of the auto damper you have and anyone elese have any pictures and planes

Solenoid is attached to a piece of flat bar welded to back of boiler right above fan. Flat bar bent on 90 deg at end to attach solenoid. Turn buckle used to attach so you have adjustment to set fan opening.

How did you do that?  I asked if you could post a photo of where and how...and here it is and you're not even online.  It's....why it's magic!

Lugnut
What can i say.  :)

Plumbing / Re: Home made insulated pex
« on: January 08, 2012, 12:57:19 PM »
I used the pre-made wrapped insulation that cost about 5 dollars a foot.  So far it's been fine.  It is 4 feet down and about 250 feet long.  Also, in my humble opinion, I believe proper backfilling of the trench is very important.  I used a rake to carefully fill the first foot or so with a sandy soil and made sure no larger stones or rocks were allowed to be on or near the O pipe.  After that the trench was filled with a mini excavator's blade.

Good advise Bull. I have buried a lot of under ground over the years some pre insulated others insulated on sight. Job sight specs. call for sand below and sand above probably 90% of the time for protection of piping.

I did mine myself and so far have had good results. Enclosed in 6'' sch 40 pvc. If i had it to do all over i would probably buy the best i could buy pre-insulated pex and install. Underground piping very important.
Hopefully mine will last a long time. But if it fails i will buy the pre insulated.

Did you measure it when you were done to see if you got what you paid for? A lot of firewood sellers cheat on what they actually deliver.

Yep should be 192 cu ft. I have heard of that happening to

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Smoke
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:46:13 AM »
I usually try to catch mine just before it starts a burn cycle. After it has been sitting for a long time hardly no smoke. If fan starts when loading usually turn it off and finish loading. If I don't  catch it at right time I just open door and stand back until smoke clears. Keep coat in basement I use for loading. Still smells like smoke. Bright side smoke ash dust is outside instead of in house like it was with wood stove!!

Plumbing / Re: Hook up outside wood stove to inside oil boiler
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:17:03 AM »
Welcome to sight Greek .RSI has already mentioned using a flat plate HX. That is the way I have mine tied into my  existing Oil boiler. I used a 60 plate and it works fine. That way your existing is kept a presurized system and OWB is non presurized. The owb with HX heats your existing boiler loop which remaims intact.
Piping in pic on left side is from OWB right side is returns from heating system going back to Oil boiler. Pump circulates water through HX 24/7 which maintains water temp. By pass is installed from oil boiler  supply back to HX inlet. I think there is a pic of return in gallery under mikenc. If not i will try and post one. Hope this helps.

If it is piped right you should not run out of DHW as long as boiler is running. Like has already been posted need info on how it is piped.

Sure beats the heck out of sledge hammer and wedges. My brother in law borrowed one just like that, we split all day and it never missed a lick.
