Outside Pipe Reconstruct
« on: August 27, 2018, 05:30:00 AM »

Hey guys, I got my video up of me redoing my outside pipes.  With the new stove coming (it arrived Saturday and I'm going to pick it up TODAY) I figured I could do better with my outside pipes.  Obviously, they are a far cry from what should be done with buried pipes.  But, as you can see, I am 8' from my garage and there just isn't the justification for all the additional work what would go into getting buried lines into my garage.

Interested to see how that goes, is the fiberglass packed pretty dense to get it inside the tile or is it loosely fit? A comment on the video about the copper crimp rings, I just take a side cutter and clip them off then remove the fitting like you did with the cinch. The cinch does look a little easier to use though

I got the fiberglass as loose as I could.  For the angled section, I got 2 pieces stuffed in there.  The horizontal piece I only used 1.  I know fiberglass needs air and fluff to be efficient, but I got it as loose as I could in an 8" pipe.

Seems like it would have been a lot easier to just buy a short section of Logstor or similar and run that over the ground.  No assembly required, much smaller, and probably similar in cost by the time you finished putting together what you did.

This is the tool I use to remove copper crimp rings. Takes a minute or less.

Fair Assessment.  I had $100 in the HDPE fittings, $70 in the pex.  $20 in frost king.  I got the pipe for free as scraps from a contractor.  If I had used Logstor, I could've gotten away with 1 line coming into the garage, but would've had to redo how my pumps are set up.  25' of Logstor, is what?  $15 a foot?  So, $375 plus shipping.  Call it $400 plus new setup around pump, round up to $450.  All said and done, looks like I was about half price of the logstor.  I wouldn't disagree that some would say $200 is worth not dealing with the headache and getting a better water tight fit.

I think what you have will work fine. There are 4 line wrapped pipe out there but how to find someone with it in stock would be tough I imagine. It's a short run so heat loss isn't a major factor (I think).
I think it's great to be working together with your kids. Good stuff.
Another note, I have a stainless cinch tool but never thought about turning it sideways to cut the ring. I started out with copper rings and am still in that mindset. :)

I would think that would put a lot of wear on the tool. I keep an old junk cinch tool for breaking the rings. I just clamp it on the normal way and bend back and forth a few times and the clamp snaps.

That is exactly what I plan on doing for the short run from the house to the stove which is 8-10 feet. The price of prefab underground pipe is high but such a short length I figured would be cost prohibitive for me to even consider. I won't have but 2 1" pipes and the electrical in the pipe so I hope the fiberglass insulation don't pose too much of a problem.  The plan is to build that up tomorrow weather permitting so I won't have too long to wait for results LOL!   And snow forecast in a few days I sure hope it works  ;)  I'm not ready to freeze to death just yet LOL!

On a side note does anybody have a way to straighten roll pex pipe?  I have been using a heat gun and a lot of manual wrestling with it. I hope there is a better way LOL!!

180° stove water works great..I've joked we need to send it through first before unrolling and hooking everything up... :)

I’ve tried heat guns, laying it on a register, etc etc. You want to work with nice straight pex, buy it in 20’ sticks.

Problem with the 20' sticks is that unless you have a 20' trailer, you have the bend them.
I am now using them and they are much easier to deal with than the coiled pipe but my trailer is only 12' long so I have them wrap around the front. Still a U shaped section of pex is easier to use than a coil.
