Title: Dump Trailer Battery?
Post by: Roscoe on November 29, 2018, 06:47:59 PM
Looking for a replacement battery for my 14' dump trailer. Who's running what and what are the recommendations? My trailer does not see daily use so I do not have a trickle charge to it from my truck. Thanks!

My brindle came with one of those high dollar AGM batteries, worked just fine then just died without warning while lifting a stove. Replaced it with a Deka Marine battery. For what they get for one of those AGM batteries I can buy several marines on sale.

I swear by Walmart batteries. I have them in my dump trailer, Bob cat, and my duramax  no complaints

NOT Interstate. Not sure why, but the last 3 Interstates I bought have lasted less than a year. The dump trailer just got a Fleet Farm RV battery last spring after the old one crapped out (6 years old) so I'm pretty happy with that. Had the same FF battery on my car trailer for the winch also about 6 years old that finally pooped out last spring, but I have not hit the winch button for about 3 years so I don't blame that thing one bit. Had one of those years where everything needs a battery, and everything else has gotten Duracell from Batteries Plus. Renegade and lawn mower have both had those for 5 years and often sit for 9 months at a time, they'll both start right now if I ask them to. They don't have a reasonable deep cycle though, which is why I use the Fleet brand

Almost all battery brands are now owned and sold by Johnson Controls (including Interstate and Optima in the past couple of years).  They're made in Mexico and their quality control isn't the best across all of their name brands.  It's hit or miss on longevity and I'd just as soon avoid all Johnson Controls batteries because of that.

To get a quality battery, you want one made by Deka or Exide.  Sears Platinum batteries are made by Deka, but their lower level batteries are made by Johnson Controls.  The last battery I bought was a massive Deka from Rock Auto for my Volvo XC70.  The original battery (Deka) lasted 13 years/275k miles before it started getting sluggish to start the vehicle.

My current battery is an Interstate marine type. Its 4 years old and needs charging between dumps. I'm hearing I need a type of battery that has some type of "reserve capacity"????

what I use, you laugh but they work for me. And if you need a replacement here they just hand you another. Dump trailer been dumping for 4 mo. charged once.

I have been using a deep cycle battery from Walmart.  I don't charge it often, but it works with no problems.  Probably had it four years or so.

What exactly are these Walmart batteries called? I see they have several different makes.

Used to have fairly good luck with NAPA batteries but I've noticed the wifes van which is the last NAPA battery we bought is starting to be sluggish. The van is downright messy now with mud but it's garage kept so it sounds like those rank the same as the majority of the rest!
