Removing rain cap for cleaning
« on: June 30, 2017, 02:11:52 AM »

Has anyone got any good ideas as to how to remove the weather cap for cleaning?
I have tried all sorts of penetrating oils  warm and cold and I can't seem to remove it without destroying it.
I would like to give everything a thorough cleaning at that level since this is the 3rd year of operation.

Thought I would ask here before breaking out the jack hammer and dynamite

if it is already discolored (or you don't mind if it is) perhaps a propane torch? I am thinking it is glued  in with tar from the wood

What if you burned some cardboard and got it really hot, then the creosote would be soft? Unless it's screwed on..

I have the socket type cap which threads on with a half turn.  I have a small gap where the cap threads into the pipe and where the bottom lip starts. I used 2 rubber strap wrenches to turn mine off.  One around the pipe as close to the thread as possible and one in the gap of the cap.  It took a little grunting but it did turn off for me.

Thanks for the Ideas!
Will be shutting down in order to get all serviced and ready for winter and I'll give another shot
