Help!! installing new system
« on: June 27, 2017, 03:15:08 PM »

I'm! Goin nuts here. Putting in new P&m bl 28-40. And trying to figure out best lines to buy as far as size. I have two water to air hx (because of an addition) and id like to do domestic hw during winter. Do i make 1" manifolds supply and return for all 3 ? Or i can buy 1" & 3/4" and do 1hx with d hw in series and put the 3 /4" to my smaller hx. Will a1" manifold in/ out be ok with seperate pumps for each hx?

What size are your HX?

I’m using Logstor with a 120,000 btu HX, a 20 plate FPHX for DHW and have a snow melt with a 30 plate FPHX and get plenty of flow to stay within a 20º delta T.

Do you have any idea what your total load will be?

Currently i have a 18x18 on my "big" furnace and a 14x16on my "little "furnace. It comes in 1" ,t's and goes 3/4" to hx. And its worked. I didnt realize 3 /4 fed both. I knew it fed the lil one. So i could take 1" through plate hx for dhw then to big hx? And on seperate 3 /4" from boiler straight to lil hx as long asmy pump will pump it correct? I dont have experience with a plate hx.

What works equally as well or even better is to use a mono flo T ahead of the flat plate, a mono flo T directs some of the water from the boiler thru the flat plate, but not all, then the discharge from the flat plate T’s back into the mainline.  This allows the use of smaller ports on a 20 plate which is usually cheaper, it also assures that you won’t have a restriction either at the flat plate.

We would normally pump a continuous 1" primary loop to the flat plate. Then use two close tees on the return of the primary loop to pump a loop through the coils that starts and stops with the blowers using relays.
Without knowing pipe lengths and blower cfm's it's a bit of a guess tho.

If i use mono t , would i use a mono t on return also?. And do i 't" on return before coil hx or after. My water tank current has a small circ pump already on it, would it be needed with monoflow t ? Im just trying to get it right the first time

What is the total distance from the wood furnace to the water heater? Trying to determine flow.

The circ pump you mentioned. Are you referring to a domestic water loop to keep hot water at the fixtures?
If the water coming back from that goes through the flat plate you might need a tempering valve to prevent overheating.

A monoflo tee diverts a portion of the flow through the side loop. A monoflo tee on the return creates more pressure drop and would divert more water than just one on the supply side.
We always just send it all through the flat plate before it goes to the hot air coils. Since it heated fine before all off of one 1" line I would just plumb the flat plate in before you go to the coils in the ducts. Route the cold domestic water through the flat plate before it enters the water heater. Be sure to counterflow. Plumb in a bypass so you can only do domestic if needed.
Just my opinion. There's more than one way to make it work.
