General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Adding storage questions
« on: January 13, 2018, 04:54:42 PM »
there may be some gain (but I am not sure) in batch burning, if your extra storage was in your house? my thinking is your OWB is always losing a certain amount of heat  and if the mass storage was outside you would lose more heat? if your storage was inside the home the lost heat from that storage would not really be lost as it would "leak" into the home

you could maybe gain a few btu in a batch burn as we know we lose heat in start up and shut downs of the cycles of the OWB  as unburnt gasses and heat exit the chimney on both

how much gain you might really get I have no idea, may be minimal may be worth it?

not sure of the model of the one in the pic but mine is a "farmi"   look up in your search "farmi winches" you should find them. newer ones I have heard are hydraulic driven but mine has a clutch you operate by pulling a rope to engage the cable and is run by the PTO. they work real slick as most of my wood comes off the side of a ravine and it is a lot nicer winching it up to flat ground to cut and split

maybe they make it better now?, but I had a glass door fire place years ago and I would leave the draft open on cold nights and just let it roar, in early spring when cleaning out the ash one day I notice insulation in the ash, unscrewed the pipes and found the one just as the pipes exited the attic had a hole near the bottom. not sure how long it had been like this but I guess with no insulation between the layers I was lucky I never set the roof on fire!

I hope that isn't that twist together double wall stainless chimney pipe, if it is, it wont take that kind of heat for long

I have a briggs and straton  16 kw generator and it came (I paid extra I believe) a cold weather kit-battery warmer and trickle charger, oil heater, carb warmer(it uses propane) that adjust to outside temps. warranted to start at -20F (Canadian province) perhaps your model and make offers such an add on?

I had a lower heating element burn out on my electric heater last year, when I removed the element I couldn't get it out the hole for the lime and stuff stuck on it. I had to break the element in two to get it out and then  I used a long slim bar to loosen as much of the stuff as I could from the bottom of the heater, trying to break it up small enough to suck them out with a vacuum  clean and a home made nozzle. I would think if you were suck some of that gravelly stuff into a pump it would not last long

240,000 btu required for a 2,500 square foot home?  that would be about the same as living in a screened porch! (96 btu per square foot)

I am going to guess your current heaters a rated at that number but you never use the full capacity ?

if you required a heater rated at 100,000 btu  and you were using them all, the heater would never shut off

certainly your heaters don't run non stop?

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Re: Pumps

I'm sure not up on all the pumps available and what it costs to run them, but still unsure why tacos are getting a bad rap? my taco 0011 has been pumping water for me 250 feet one way since 2003. shut it off in April and turn it on in October. every year now for a while I been thinking, this is the year it don't start, 14 years and counting. I will likely replace it with a grundfos just because there is a dealer of these pumps very close to me but if he sold tacos I would likely try another one.

Plumbing / Re: loop question
« on: June 30, 2017, 05:35:33 PM »
I didn't get the pump info but we have our three main headers and all our pipe in the system we added enough water to keep the pressure up a little to keep the system full  and allow a few air bubbles still in the system to hopefully settle in the top of the cooler where we can drain them off.

anyway,, all loops are moving water as you can see some small air bubbles moving through the 3 inch semi clear return  lines from each loop. best guess is water is moving in these hoses 2.5 to 3 feet a second. thee inlet pressure at the pump is 30 and the pressure at  the return side  of the pump is about 15. if the pump  is shut off pressures equal on each side

if it is already discolored (or you don't mind if it is) perhaps a propane torch? I am thinking it is glued  in with tar from the wood

Is it possible to find the flow curve for the pump?

I will see if I can find any numbers on it today, the chiller came in as a rental unit and is painted over but maybe they didn't paint the name plate

I think we would be happy with 2.5 or 3 gpm, we should have it all hooked up by early next week, I wont know the true gpm but I will post pressures and inlet and return temps

there is a lot of pipe and each loop is only about 3.5 wide so there are sharp  90's on the ends of all the loops.  With the one set of loops running the pump has settled at 40 psi leaving the pump and only 2 psi at the return (gauge is three feet from suction of pump)

ok now some major thinking on you guys now....instead of heat, think cool water, lots of it

a large chilling unit with a 2 inch centrifugal pump driving it, feeding into a three inch header with (now) 14 loops of 5/8 plastic pipe of 600 feet per loop. about 30 psi on the "out" of the pump and only 2 psi on the return at the pump side. the unit is working well and water must be moving quickly, the cooling area of these loops is only 8 feet wide and 2 feet high (like a plastic tepee, in full sun) cooling water is entering at 40 degrees f and returning at no noticeable change, tent is 14 degrees cooler that outside of tent.  now the owner is thinking of adding another 28 loops, so I  guess mu question would be if there will be enough pressure on the return side as to not cause cavitation at the pump?

Plumbing / loop question

lets say you have a circuit of 10 loop and you decide to add another ..all loops on the same header and all loops the same length and size, will this added loop cause more head or only take away from the flow on the other loops?
