Title: Plate Exchangers for Swimming Pool / OWB
Post by: Coach on July 03, 2018, 04:46:26 PM
I have been heating my pool with my OWB for a number of years now.    Lately I have noticed my OWB is over flowing, I believe my Plate Exchanger has rusted through and now my pool water is ending up at the OWB.  So I will be buying a New Plate Exchanger.

My question is: do I need to purchase a special type of Plate Exchanger?  I believe I saw somewhere where when used with Chlorine Swimming Pool I should use only a specific type of plate exchanger.

Maybe someone has run into this and can advise.

Thanks

The chlorine is hard on the copper brazing. An all stainless tube and shell heat exchanger would hold up to the chlorine. I've used flat plates for a quick heat up, then flush with fresh water.
I'd think it might be good to drain the stove to get rid of the chlorine, flush and refill, what do the rest of you guys think?

I’d flush the stove and refill for no other reason than depending on the treatment it may not react nicely with chorine.

Thanks guys,

I am planning on draining the OWB today and refilling it.  I have enough of the 101G2 here at the house to do the job.

Well,  In speaking with the Alt Heating Supply People, he advises me against using a stainless Steel Plate Exchanger for heating the pool because it is Brazed with copper.  He said Plate Exchangers are not intended for Pools.  He advises a Tube N Shell Heat Exchanger.  They are actually made for Swimming Pools.

So another lesson learned.  I did get 10 years of  service out of the plate exchanger, and it worked adequately.  And it is about $300 cheaper.

Thanks for your help

10 years isn't bad considering the chlorine that sat in it (I presume).

Well I did take the plate exchanger in every winter and clean it up....
