Title: Heatmor 400 BTU extraction
Post by: heat550 on October 06, 2017, 03:11:07 AM
Has anyone tried just burning slab wood in the outdoor boiler .  I can get 4ft x 3ft x 8ft bundles oak $50
its ruffly 3/4 of a cord per bundle . and I can get them by semi load . my boilers 54 inch deep . so its like
cutting them in half. and stack them in . any thoughts ?? has anyone tried it . is it a trade off of time spent
sawing and splitting . to staking slabs in boiler ? was told there bigger piece also and de barked . going to
look at them next week .

I burned tons of slabwood in my 400 heat....worked great....especially in the fall and early spring. Dead winter I would mix it with splits....but it worked great regardless. I was getting 8ft slabs and all I would do is cut them in half!!

Have you used them before ? I'm concerned how long they will last.
Because there going to burn hot. Hope stove can transfer it in to the water fast enough. I only burned logs before..

Did you turn your thermostat down. I'm getting a 20 degree jump after draft fans shut off . I think it's heating do to coals and steel in fire box is so hot. There is some serious heat in them there oak slabs.. I have boiler set at 150f ..cold stove70f to 140f in about 38 mins. On slabs ..

We're they oak dry slabs ? I might have to check closer.
I'm heating 6600 spft boiler at 150 degrees jumping to
170 degrees on occasion depending on how many slabs I put in.
180 f it be serious over kill but I will try it up to 160 then if it jumps to 180degree I would be pretty safe..

Did you notice with slabs if you put in alot to get a good coal bed 4-5 inchs . then about every 5-8 hours give a stir keep putting  in about 3-5 inchs more of slabs . and treat it like coal bed. it doesn't take much to keep it all going  . and heat coming out of ex changers stink hot
cycle times are about 5 mins of draft fan and 30-45 mins off time . Heat coming out is amazing . in reality it kinda the way you fire a indoor stove on a cold night .  but once that grate is covered with coals it really pounds out the heat. and Im only dealing with about
8 inchs of coals over the whole grate . and yes chimney extension cap glows red just before draft fans kick off . Crazy heat .

Yep slabs work good at subzero. It takes more but keeps house warm . Seems 400 is good at the heat extraction.

Just to clarify, what is your low and high temps set on the aquastat?

With slabs shut down it creeps up to 15 degrees . so 140f to 160f is set point . But it creeps to 175f burning slabs I'm still tinkering with it at subzero temps outside . Oak slabs it seems to depend on how many coals are in there . more coals the more it creeps at shut down . These are dry bark free oak slabs . went thru about 3.5 bundles so far sence about 2 weeks ago. Very cold weather here . they burn way hotter then I thought they would. At this point I can not totally fill the stove gets to wild . I need to put adjustable duct on draft fans to slow things down .

This might give you a idea what burning hot is.

I hope that isn't that twist together double wall stainless chimney pipe, if it is, it wont take that kind of heat for long

maybe they make it better now?, but I had a glass door fire place years ago and I would leave the draft open on cold nights and just let it roar, in early spring when cleaning out the ash one day I notice insulation in the ash, unscrewed the pipes and found the one just as the pipes exited the attic had a hole near the bottom. not sure how long it had been like this but I guess with no insulation between the layers I was lucky I never set the roof on fire!

Oo wow mines on the boiler .. it only does it when stoves going from 70 to 150f on water temp ya long burn . And if I put to big  flat piece of slabs over the grate. And at -20f .needs to be settled down a bit with draft doors on draft fans.

Ok heats going in to water now . had to block off 1/2 of the front draft fan . This means slowed down draft to under grate and above grate . Theres a lot of BTUs to deal with when comes to oak slabs

no more cherry red rain cap .. so its unbelievable how much everything had to be slowed down .
I would of never guess it had to be slowed down that much . :bag:
