Natures Comfort / Re: Is this normal ?

Good afternoon fryedaddy.
My OWB is a NCB 175. It holds close to 175 gallons of water. I keep it set at 150 degrees off 135 on. The only time i go any higher is when temps drop into teens and single digits. Then i usually bump it up to 115-160.  Circulating pump to plated heat exchanger runs continually so water is always circulating through OWB.
Made some changes to boiler first year I had it.  Insulated bottom of boiler and enclosed it. Came from factory with no  insulation on bottom, hard to believe. lol. Installed better temperature controller. Modified fan, and built new fire grate. One that gave it a more uniform burn and i could use to burn coal if i wanted to. factory grate was not much in my opinion.
True AHU fan does run a little longer at lower temps but the wood i save out weighs fan running.
I use OWB in summer to heat domestic HW. Burn scrape soft wood most of the time in summer. Poplar, Pine just whatever.
Add wood in winter twice a day. Morning and just before bed. Only add enough to keep fire until next loading time. I Try not to overload.

Best Regards,
Mike

Allis48, it looks like pics you posted were of the back of your boiler.
Decided I would check my boiler to see how bad it is rusting by running at what a lot of people consider to low temps. Shut it down yesterday first time in 3 years. I keep fire in mine summer and winter. Heat my domestic hot water in summer.
Very little rust. Checked back front and sides. It all looked pretty good. Back seemed to have a little more than sides or front. Nothing compared to pics you posted.

They say temps to low causing moisture on the inside of the firebox while it's burning
I keep mine at 150 and have no problems with sweating. With 15 degree differential. Heats my house and domestic hot water. Burns less wood to. Try to burn only seasoned wood.

Are you putting this on the supply line?
The redirect check I have has two probes. One labeled smoker the other food. I strap one on supply to heat excganger, the other to supply coming out of heat exchanger going to my oil fired boiler. The one that reads wood boiler supply to heat exchanger Iis my main cconcern. I can tell at a glance if I need to add wood.

I use a redi check. Transmitter in basement receiver up stairs . It works very well. Strap probes with tie wraps to piping under insulation to get best reading.

I have a 175 installed in 2009. Mine is older model and i understand they have made a lot of changes. I heat roughly 3600 sq. ft & 52gal DHW, basement heated to 70 and up stairs to 73. Thats about all mine can handle to. Fill twice a day unless we get into single digets then have to add a few extra pieces. You might do a search for some older threads where damper settings was discussed on newer models.

I Burn around 51/2 cords of wood a year from october to late march all as been seasoned around 2 years. Once you get your dampers adjusted you will probably see a differance in your stove if you are burning seasoned wood.

Best Regards
Mike

I have a pump on mine. I put a tee at relief  valve and one on drain to circulate mine. I would think You will need a circulating line in order to keep constant hot water at fixtures in house.

Mine has fan, I added 12ft to mine and have not had any problems. Used insulated kind tried stove pipe one year and thats all it lasted. I needed to get smoke up higher to. It does increase draft on stove or it did mine but has not been a problem.

Goes to show how important insulation is. Mine is buried about 2 ft and run inside 6" pvc to. They have never melted snow either. Insulated them myself. So far they are doing ok. Hope they last a looooong time looking at the prices of new pipe (scarey. Can't imagine the amount of heat loss using no insulation.
