The copper foil tape is in my PO box so I will be trying it next week when I pick it up. It will be interesting to see if it makes any difference over the aluminum tape.

I think I will put a copper tubing compression adapter on a sensor and drill and tap through the end of the valve where it is soldered to the copper pipe. I think there should be enough meat there for 1/4" npt threads. If it works, I should be able to get exact water temps for comparison.

I used a 1/8 NPT x 1/4 tubing compression fitting. You have to drill the fitting a little bigger to let the sensor pass through.

That is good to know. I will probably try than instead then. Will be easier to tap.
