General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / -30 fahrenheit!

What kind of burn times is everyone getting with temps that cold? That's what we had last night and I checked the boiler at 12 hours and was good still so I will follow up a time when I have to fill it. I'm heating 2500 sq ft and dhw with a side arm. Radiant infloor in the basement and a 18x18 heat exchanger in the furnace for upstairs.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Bl owners

How does everyone like their boilers? I love mine and here are my findings with it.
1. I'm heating 2,500 sq ft and dhw
2. Ive got the stove figured out to get consistent 12-14 burn times

A couple things I've noticed is that if you are good about raking the coals, cleaning the heat exchanger and making sure the grates are not plugged this stove is fantastic! If I overload it will burn all the wood but produce a giant coal bed. But this boiler is definitely up to the task it was pushing -20 and windy last night and stuffed it full just to be sure and I ended up with a massive amount of coal. I was at 15 hours burn time when I added wood and only added because I was leaving for about 5 hours and didn't want it to go out. I have no complaints about this boiler yet and love the fact that its rebuildable if I ever need to. I'm also burning paper birch, oak, ash, and maple and have burned about 5 cord. How are your stoves treating you?

I'm curious about these boilers I would like to hear from you guys that have one! How do you like it and any issues with them. Also could anyone that owns one put a YouTube video of the burn and smoke output during gasification, I would love to see that.

Now that there are more owners and more time on your boilers, has anyone found the sweet spot for the fan damper? All the way open, 1/2 open what effects have you had changing it?

Portage & Main / Bl2840 idle temp climbing
« on: December 25, 2014, 06:46:08 PM »
Slimjim or any Bl owners here is my issue, setpoint is 190 with a 10 degree differential and I don't know if I'm leaking air so that the fire is not choking down enough or what the problem is but I just checked the aquastat and I was at 196 and slowly climbed to 199 before I turned my radiant infloor up to pull some heat out of the boiler. The boiler has always had more smoke out of the stack than my brother in laws heatmor and I'm just curious as to what everyone thinks?

Portage & Main / Bl 2840 ash door dripping water
« on: December 16, 2014, 12:03:09 PM »
Since day one I have had water dripping from the ash pan door, it was very little when it was warmer now it is 16 degrees out and its dripping more. My thought is this either there is an air leak in my gasket or its creating condensation on the 1/4 steel section that is uninsulated. There is water slightly puddles up 2-3" back from the edge of the door opening.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / unseasonably warm
« on: December 14, 2014, 08:57:04 PM »
Had to have my sister in law fill the boiler and she filled it full. Checked it when I got home and periodically through the day today and added about 6-8 logs but got 27 hrs before I had to fill it and could have probably gone 30 I'm sure. Heated the basement slab so the basement was at 70-72 and the furnace for the upper level has not come on in 3 days at least.

Plumbing / 2840 is up and running.
« on: December 12, 2014, 07:16:00 AM »
So after a little debate on how exactly I wanted it plumbed I went with a fully open system nothing in the house is pressurized. Furnace and water heater are about 10 ft higher than the boiler.
