If it was me I wouldn't do it. I would think it would damage the steel.

The height doesn't matter much. It is the size and length of pipe and what else it has to push water through that would determine what will work.
If you have a fairly short unrestricted run, a Grundfos Alpha might pump as much or more than the 009. If it is longer, it would probably be less but still may work.

A Grundfos 15-58 or Taco 0015 are about the same size as the alpha but use about 85 watts compared to the Alpha at about 40 watts.

There are other brands of ECM pumps that have similar flow ratings as the Alpha. I haven't looked at what Taco has lately but the 007E is probably too small.

If you can't feel a difference between the supply and return pipes with the blower running then it is an exchanger issue. Did you confirm that the water inlet is on the side of the heat exchanger that the our blows out of? (flow opposite directions)
If so then I would guess either it is partially air locked, you don't have enough air flow or it is just too small.

Those infrared thermometers never seem to work on pipes.
Can you hold your hand on the line at the heat exchanger? If you can keep your hand on it at all you probably are not near 180. Can you feel a big temperature difference between supply and return pipes?

Is the supply pipe at the heat exchanger as hot as the boiler? If so, how much cooler is the return out of the heat exchanger?
Do you have the water flowing opposite of the airflow as mentioned by Shepherd Boy?
Do you hear and noise in the heat exchanger? If so, try closing a valve on the return line and open back up instantly. Usually that will purge trapped air. If you hear air gurgle out then repeat till there is no more air.

250' round trip is a lot for a 007. Might get 5 gpm if you are lucky. The 009 should get around 7 gpm on the same loop.
The short loop the 007 would probably do about 10 gpm and the 009 would do a little over 9gpm.

The pumps should be swapped opposite of what you have them. The 009 should be on the long run and the 007 on the short run.

I would throw the 10 plate away and get a 20 for starters.

Depending on what is in it, just vinegar might be all you need to use. It will require pumping it through though. Just dumping it in will never clean it out completely. When I have done it, I just pump out of a gallon jug of vinegar and put return hose into jug too. Run pump till it is as dark green as it will get and then swap out to a new jug. Keep doing it till it stays clear.

You should be able to do the same thing with stronger chemicals but need pump and hoses that are compatible.

Plumbing / Re: How can this be usable?

Had another  :bash: today.
Can anyone see how this is supposed to work? I had the camera too close  so didn't get everything in the picture but there is a pex barb behind the white valve handle in the middle and another just to the left of that same valve. The arrows were apparently how they expected the flow to go. The valve on the right side is a 3 way valve. There is no other connection to the rest of the indoor heating system other than the top port on that valve.

The indoor system is an almost brand new wall mounted LP boiler that is connected to floor heat and also to an indirect water heater tank. Looked like the boiler was set at 138°. The water heater is on a parallel loop to the floor heat and appears to have a pump that comes on based on water temp in the domestic tank. The thing in the picture is attached to that DHW tank loop. (boiler water)

he said whoever set this up knew he had an open system outdoor boiler. Indoor system is pressurized with auto fill. Also there was no mixing valve anywhere in the system.

He wanted me to just hook the OWB to those two pipes even after I told him about 10 reasons why was bad and/or it wouldn't work. I told him he had to get the company that put that in do the connections. He said it was the same company that installed the whole indoor system.  :o

So is there something I am missing here? Is that not just a 3 way ball valve? I told him I wanted pictures of what they do. Hopefully he sends them. Hahaha

Plumbing / How can this be usable?
« on: September 13, 2021, 02:39:26 PM »
I just got a call from a customer asking about cleaning out his plate exchangers. As far as I can tell he has a 10 plate  (5x12") on the water heater and then another 10 plate in series that heats the indoor boiler. The pictures he sent look like a Grundfos 15-58 pump. (not very clear). The indoor boiler system has cast iron radiators.
He says it has been setup like this since 2008. I can't see how he can be getting more than a couple GPM through the system. I was expecting to see at least a 26-99 or larger for the pump.
I am thinking that swapping out both plates to 20's would make the system at least function ok. I normally wouldn't put a 20 on the boiler but since the 10 has supposedly been working, is there any reason to go bigger?

The FC has a check valve in it and just the F does not. I think the F means it is a flanged model.
The single speed pumps have UP before the number and 3 speed pumps have UPS.

Did you pop the rotor out of the can? If so you should be able to see where it is binding.
