Got to say I'm impressed with the Global Moderator choices our site owner has made.

I was ready to give up on this site, but I guess ya'll are stuck with me for a while!

Plumbing / 3 Way Return Line Mixing Valves
« on: January 20, 2013, 10:02:52 AM »
Do any of you dealers sell these? A friend of mine wants to install one on his OWB. He never knows when he might return from work, and from time to time his boiler temperatures get as low as 130*. He'd rather come home to a chilly home that ruin his 12k dollar boiler. He could get one from his local dealer, but they are not speaking at the present time, but that's another story.
I have one that I'd bought for my Empyre 100, but I can't find the dang thing anywhere. Seems like I paid around a hundred bucks or so for it, and it was a Danfoss, I think?
You can send me a pm if you would.
Thanks!

Early this summer I accidentally stumbled across what is probably the biggest source for wasted BTU's in my application - namely the earth leaching heat from the continuous running of my pump. I found that by reducing my pump run time from 24/7 to just 8 hours/day, my wood consumption was reduced by just about exactly half when just heating my hot water. I put the pump on a timer so that it would come on from 3:30 - 6:30 am and also 5:30 - 10:30pm. I have a sidearm exchanger on a 52 gallon water heater and my tank temp would usually be in the 165* range. My wife has Mondays off, so I would leave the circulator on all day so she could catch up on laundry.

My plan is to move my pump to my basement and somehow hook it up so that when my tank temperature falls to a certain point (maybe 125*)my circulator would kick on. I would also want the pump to activate when my house calls for heat, but there needs to be about a 25 second delay so that in the event it hadn't ran in a while(the pump), I wouldn't have 25 seconds of ambient plenum air, or colder (think 40* line water going through the water to air exchanger) circulating through my house. I realize I'd need two controls, but I thought I'd see if you guys had done something similar to this in the past.

I believe that we all lose A LOT of heat to the ground by means of our underground lines. I think we can reduce our fuel consumption considerably by only running the pumps when necessary. I realize it wouldn't be the 50% I realized in the summer months just heating my DHW, but would a 10 - 20% reduction be unrealistic when heating both home and water? BTW, my underground line is from CB. I used to believe it was the best insulated line out there. I'm not so sure anymore.

Yoder, RSI, Scott, what do you all think?

Wood Doctor / Here we go......AGAIN
« on: June 30, 2012, 11:46:45 AM »
Ya' all remember our friend good Carol and her ordeal she had with her 8000 gasser(Humble Apology in an earlier thread)?
Arthur did the right thing by her and gave her a replacement boiler(took about 2 years or more).
Well, guess what. This new one is leaking after only 7 months.
In 4 years they've had two 8000 gassers, and both have been leakers.
She called me yesterday and gave me the news.
She wondered who she might call or what she should do.
I'm at a loss. Any suggestions folks?

Ridge is selling his Grundfos Alpha 15-55F. I thought I'd keep it around for a replacement in the event my cheap Menards 3 speed Grundfos ($100) goes bad. I don't have the box for it anymore, so I don't know the model #. It's banged up on the back, but I can make out a pc# 1036. Will his be a suitable replacement if mine fails?

   Thanks guys

Google: "Bob in Pennsylvania Modifys His Outdoor Boiler"
This guy more than doubled his boilers efficiency, made it smoke free, and reduced wood consumption  This experiment has Ridgekid written all over it ;)

Came across this site today. Very easy to use. Not very accurate for my house, but probably OK for a better insulated home.

Site Suggestions / OWB Registry by Brand Name and Model
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:08:44 AM »
I don't know whether this would be possible(see subject) or not.It might be a valuable resource in the event someone has trouble with their particular brand or model #. We'd be able to PM each other with questions without involving everyone else. It would also be very interesting to find out just how many of each brand of OWB's there are.

Wood Doctor / Crossing fingers and holding breath

Carol called me a few hours ago and told me that she talked to Arthur today. He inquired as to whether or not she had got her HE 8000 fixed or replaced yet. After a short conversation, he informed her that a new boiler would be on it's way and at her house in 3 days. He was going to call her back with the trucker's phone #. According to him, all it should cost her will be hiring someone to move the old one out of the way  and unload the new one from the semi, as well as hiring someone to do the necessary installs required. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised, but also very cautiously optimistic to say the least. I'll keep ya'll posted. This will be step one in the right direction for him and his company if he proceeds through with it.

Fire Wood / Bundled slab wood
« on: December 04, 2011, 02:06:34 PM »
A local saw mill not far from me offers bundled slab wood for $12/ bundle. They say that there is usually just over 1 full cord in a bundle. One of my friends weighed a bundle and it weighed just over 4500 lbs. Does anyone burn it regularly, and if so, are you happy with it? I'm doing the math, and if I go through 7 cords/year times $12/cord(bundle), that's really cheap heat. I certainly can't justify going out to the woods if I can pay $84 and the only work involved is cutting and stacking. For $100 more, one of my friends will haul all 7 bundles to my house with his boss' semi. With chainsaw gas and oil factored in, and maybe another $50 for miscellaneous, that's about $250/year.

What do ya'll think? Should I put my TSC splitter up for sale?

Equipment / TSC (speed-Pro) splitters recalled?
« on: December 04, 2011, 01:41:20 PM »
I wanted to demo a TSC splitter and had it set up with the store manager a couple weeks ago. Went in today to find out that not only can I not demo it, but there is a recall on them. Couldn't tell me why because they did not know. They have only sold one, and the other one is locked up on the lot. Anyone of you have more political clout than me with TSC brass? I have none.
