Playing with the idea of getting a geothermal system in place, not so much for heating end as for cooling, temperatures here today broke 107 degrees!!!!!  Would the two systems work together in the wintertime,or would I be causing trouble with creosote issues etc due to furnace not having to do all of the heating?

Okay,so now this furnace is really impressing me,we are into wood that's been under cover in the shed now for  about 4 years, figured we should use it before it got too dry? Anyway,as stated before, first furnace would do an 8 hour burn on two wheelbarrow loads of wood, second furnace 6-7 hours on three wheelbarrow loads of wood, present furnace 12-14 hours on two wheelbarrow loads of wood, but now with the really dry stuff - ONE wheelbarrow load of wood for a 12-14 hour burn, sometimes even 15 hours!!!!

I have seen others post pictures of their house showing spots where the heat is seeping out of the house? Where would I find one of these without paying a fortune, and if at all possible renting might be a better option,as would not need to continually check?

HeatMaster / Why is the furnace more efficient the colder it gets?
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:57:38 AM »
I believe it was CountryboyJohn who told me this when I was looking to replace previous furnace. Last evening was our first major chill of the winter, down to -31 with the wind chill. I put in two wheelbarrow loads of mostly maple last evening, now 14 hours later and still not needing wood. On previous nights to this with similar loads, would be needing to add wood after 14 hours, even though it was milder outside. I had thought maybe I had the draft adjustment set to high and blowing heat up the stack. I will be taking stack temperatures with an infra red gun over the holidays, with different settings to see if there is much of a difference in heat loss.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Anyone heard of an Orlan Furnace?
« on: December 09, 2017, 05:11:31 AM »
Going through the farm paper this morning, saw an ad for Orlan Furnace, claiming 92-93% efficiency, now that’s pretty high!

HeatMaster / MF e models- what percentage do you run your draft at?
« on: November 13, 2017, 04:16:25 PM »
On our 20000, I played with the draft percentage last year, dealer told me it was too low, causing creosote issues,so he recommended setting it between 45-50% Our model also has what I would call afterburners,an add on where air is also injected above the fire downwards towards the grates via two square tubes to burn off the gasses. I am assuming you could probably go by stack temperatures whether you are pushing too much up the stack,or how high you can go for an even hotter fire?

General Discussion / Can you run a pump vertically?
« on: April 15, 2017, 06:14:15 PM »
Our Grundfos pump is mounted horizontally, that is east to west,as is my Fathers Taco pump. I have a possible usage for another pump next spring, the hot distillate water coming from my maple syrup evaporator to be pumped back into the pans to clean them periodically. If the pump were mounted vertically, north and south would it drain back completely that I wouldn't have to worry about freezing up?
Thanks in advance for your help

 Would you------------
A-Get the same furnace ?
B-Go a size bigger or smaller ?
C- Go with a different model- eg-gasser ?
D-Go with a different brand?

Had this question put to me the other day by an individual that had been sent out by the dealer to see the furnace,my answer was definitely A,couldn't be happier with the furnace that I now have.

The arctic circle has arrived. Temperature here this morning, minus 23 degrees Fahrenheit, wind chill of minus 57 degrees Fahrenheit!!!! I measured approximately 2 wheelbarrow loads of dead but not seasoned elm into the furnace, roughly 18-20 inches in length per piece, mostly smaller diameter pieces that I was concerned wouldn't last the night.I measured the flue temperature with an infrared thermometer, showed a respectable 480-520 degrees Fahrenheit.I marked the time,7:30 p.m,checked at 7:30 am this morning, still going strong. I will try to get measurements this week of the two houses it is heating,as well as a picture of the furnace to show its size as requested

My sister asked me to look at a boiler near her,she thinks it is a wood doctor? It was running last winter, but the renters? didn't pay the guy that cut their wood for them,so he quit cutting wood for them. This winter they are not running the boiler,so it is either A- they didn't drain the boiler and it is froze up,possibly welds burst?, B-They drained the boiler so it is like hauling a piece of metal out of the lake exposing it to the elements, rusting away, C- if they couldn't pay their bill for getting wood cut, chances are they didn't maintain the boiler very well. I told her i wouldn't touch the deal with a ten foot pole, but she would like me to look at it,what should I be looking for,any thoughts?
Thanks

HeatMaster / WOW!!-14 Hour burn time unheard of before
« on: January 04, 2016, 09:02:39 AM »
Loaded two wheelbarrow loads of wood into the furnace last night, wasn't sure how much to put in.Temperature here fell to minus 4 Fahrenheit, minus 25 with the wind,it is deadly out there.Wood is cut to roughly 18" lengths, went to the furnace after bus runs and chores at the barn, still big bed of coals, plus a couple blocks that were charred but not broken to coals yet, could have gone a couple more hours. With the first furnace two loads would have lasted roughly 8 hours, second furnace THREE loads would have lasted about 7 hours. This furnace is the best, congratulations Heatmaster!

HeatMaster / Wire Chimney Brushes For Cleaning Exchanger?
« on: December 02, 2015, 05:30:11 PM »
Just wondering if one of those wire brushes meant for cleaning chimney flues would be a good idea for cleaning the exchanger on the top of the 20000 e?I measure it at 6" x 17", so would it be better to go with a 7" brush,or should I stay with a 6" ? The 6" brush is 6 x  10, the 7" brush is 7 x12
Thanks
