General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Well its all over
« on: March 06, 2016, 05:35:17 AM »
had an issue with a neighbor, I tried to talk like adults with him, he has yelled at my wife on several occasions because she asked him to stop taking pictures of our house and property.  Of course they won the battle.  we got a letter from DEC saying we will decease OWB operation on May 31 we must disassemble our OWB and dispose of it.  we can not install a new unit due to the new regulation saying you have to be 100' from all property lines.  our only other option is to get an indoor wood boiler, which DEC cant do anything about.(makes no sense to me) So we are going to burn oil next winter and do more research on indoor boilers.  I want to thank all the people on here that have helped me with my OWB over the past few years.  there are a lot of knowledgeable people here.  I will be back burning wood hopefully in a few years.  any suggestions on indoor units?  Thanks again and let the smoke fly.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Boiler temp
« on: January 16, 2016, 07:28:33 PM »
I have a few questions about setting the temp on the OWB.  The first two years I've lived in my current home and used my OWB my temp was always set at 180 using the factory thermos disc.  last year after I reinsulated it and hooked up the ranco I ran at 170 with a differential of 7.  Burned great all year(80% oak and maple).  This year I added some insulation used on nuclear power plants thinking it will be even better. They claim 2000 degrees on one side and u can touch the insulation with your hand and not feel any heat.  Anyway, this year I set my aqua stat at 190 with a differential of 5(mix of cherry, beach, soft maple, not really seasoned 100%).  I don't really see much a difference running 190.  May I add I also swapped from a gundfos 15-58 running on medium to a 26-99 running on medium.  This year has been very mild and it seems like I'm during more wood.  I don't believe its the insulation because I still using the same insulation as last year just added to it.  So my question is, is it because I'm running 190 and the differential is only at 5 or am I circulating water to fast?  I am around 50 feet away so a total of 100 feet loop.  Sorry for the long winded stuff but you guys are great on here and thought id give as much info as I could.  Thanks.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / insulated chimney pipe
« on: December 18, 2015, 06:49:11 PM »
is there any advantage or disadvantages to switching to double or triple wall insulated pipe?  I have an opportunity to get some at a good price and wondering if its worth it or not.  also does a higher stack benefit you at all or hurt you?  Thanks

Shaver Furnace / circulator location
« on: November 25, 2015, 07:10:02 AM »
I am wondering how many shaver owners have the circulator located on the bottom port of the stove, pumping from the bottom instead of the top.  I think there are many benefits to running off the bottom.  including:  pump should never loose its prime, more head pressure, less chance of pump cavitation, and returning the colder water on top.  I'm looking into doing this soon.  I read on a shaver install sheet that they recommend moving pump to the bottom port.  just curious if anyone has done it and what they experienced for pros and cons.

Thanks.

Plumbing / bleeding air from system
« on: October 25, 2015, 05:48:46 AM »
I made a post this week about adding a hydronic heater in my garage.  I added another loop using another circulator and another return to my stove.  Thanks to RSI for all the help.  I put all the stuff in yesterday fired up stove and can hear lots of air in the system.  The new loop I added I put in a drain valve where I can bleed on the return side.  I bleed the air out of that loop and its working good(may have to bleed one more time).  My question is on my house loop.  I put a new circulator in(replaced a 15-58 with a 26-99).  I have only one place where I can bleed that side and that's on the return at the stove.  what is the best way to bleed my house loop?  I'm thinking close the return let it build pressure for 30 seconds and open the ball valve.  is that thinking correct or totally wrong.  I jut don want to burn up the new circulator.  another question is the 26-99 louder then the 15-58 or is it just the air in the system still.  Hope I explained it ok if not let me know and I will try again.

Thanks
Adam

Plumbing / Adding a hydronic heater to garage.
« on: October 19, 2015, 06:10:42 PM »
I hope all the professionals will chime in with some much needed advise.I have a reznor hydronic heater that is brand new and I would like to hook up in my garage.  I was thinking of teeing off the feed line coming into my heat exchanger and using a monoflo valve.  I have a separate circulator for this unit and was unsure if this idea would work.  my other option  is adding another zone off my inside furnace.  Will using the monoflo valve setup affect my house heat?  Will the monoflo valve idea work at all?  Thanks in advance.

Getting ready to fire up the boiler within the next few weeks and I wanted to flush my plate exchanger.  Can I use a pressure washer?  Compressed air?  Water hose?  and do I need chemicals and f so what should I use?

Thanks

As for a lot of us we are gearing up for the upcoming winter.  I need another circulator too have around just in case.  right now I have a grundfos 15-58 running on high setting.  My OWB is about 50' from the heat exchanger in my garage.  Its piped with 1" pex to and from heat exchanger.  I have a 30 plate for my DHW and a 50 plate for heat.  My house is not that big 1600 square feet.  My plan was to use the 15-58 as a back up and get a 26-99.  One of my problems is that my house has trouble getting past 74 degrees when its cold out, I got to thinking if my pump outside isn't big enough to feed that big exchanger then I wont never get enough BTU to heat inside.  Is my thinking off?  So will the 26-99 do a better job feeding my exchanger?

Thanks

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Water temp in summer months
« on: May 31, 2015, 06:28:09 AM »
I have a ton of pine that I need to get rid off(all wood was free)   :).  So my thoughts were lets burn it in OWB and not have to run hot water heater at all this year.  My question is what is a goo temp to run the boiler at?  Im running it on 165 with temp differential of 5.  Seems to me that that's too high just for hot water.  could I run it at 150 with diff of 5 degrees?  I have been told that anything below 160 is bad for the OWB because of condensation.  Can anyone help me with this theory and any suggestions on temps this summer.  Thanks.

Shaver Furnace / Door adjustment
« on: January 12, 2015, 06:22:35 PM »
is there a way to adjust the closing of the door?  the lower portion of the dear seal is starting to leak and I was wondering if there was a way to tighten the door closure up a little.  I have rope gasket on my door and this is the 3rd winter with it so I know im in to replace it but would like to wait till spring if I could.
Thanks

Electronics / Buzzing blower
« on: November 29, 2014, 05:04:31 PM »
I have noticed that at times (maybe 3-4)  when I go and load my stove that the blower is buzzing.  if I tap on it with something it will stop.  its a brand new shaver modified blower from altheat.com with the dampner and solenoid.  The blower works all the time and and has not quit.  when it stops buzzing it sounds quite.  so im unsure what the noise is and if I should be ready for it to stop working soon.  its been in operation for 2 weeks to the day was brand new out of the box.

Thanks in advance

Shaver Furnace / knocking noise
« on: November 16, 2014, 06:47:58 AM »
I fired up my stove yesterday after a long summer of upgrades to my 165.  BTW the upgrades are working great.  the Ranco is awesome.  Anyway, I noticed when the blower kicks on and the water temp starts to come back up I can hear a loud knocking noise coming from stove.  when it gets up to temp the noise stops.  it sounds like something is loose and banging inside water jacket.  has anyone ever experienced this?  stove is working great with all new insulation and the new ranco.

thanks

Shaver Furnace / running out of hot water
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:23:16 AM »
i have a shaver 165 with an electric hotwater heater.  I have one thermostat set low for the electric and the other one set normal for use with OWB.  after giving kids a bath doing dishes and wife showers my shower will be short due to lack of hotwater.  anyone have and ideas?  OWB is always up t temp.  when hotwater isn't hot, inlet pipe to hotwater heater is warm but not hot hot.  so im wondering if I have a issue with owb or with hwh.  water heater 2 years old.  would installing a plate exchanger help my situation?  anyone have pictures of their hot water hook up?

Thanks
Adam
