Plumbing / Lost thermosiphon?
« on: May 06, 2018, 04:57:21 PM »
Hey everyone it's been a while since I've been around. Looking for some help with a problem I'm having. I've got a sidearm hooked up to my 40 gallon hot water heater and it has always worked great. Friday a windstorm took our power out and it was off for a little over 24 hours. When the power came back on and everything was up and running I had hot water as usual. This morning my wife wanted to take a shower and the water was ice cold. Stove was up to temp so that wasnt the issue. I felt the pipe coming out of the top of the sidearm that runs into the hot water heater and it was cool to the touch. So I turned the switch on so the elements would come on and we would have hot water again. What would have caused the thermosiphon to stop, and more importantly how do I fix it? Thanks for any help.

RidgeWood Stoves, defunct, support only / Love controller
« on: March 23, 2016, 06:32:23 PM »
So, the latest thing to happen is my controller just went bad. I noticed it looked like my stove had been running a long time so I went out and checked and it was at 190 degrees. Had to unhook the electric to get it to shut off as the fan was running and damper was open even though it was 10 degrees past when it was supposed to shut off. Anyone else had this? Did you get another love or did you go with something else?

Fire Wood / Help me ID some trees
« on: March 20, 2015, 06:21:11 PM »
My tree identifying skills are not too sharp yet and I want to make sure I am not wasting my time with lesser quality wood. Anyone who can chime in and tell me what these are would be greatly appreciated. I am in the thumb in michigan if that helps at all.

Was a little bored out deer hunting tonight and started wondering what effect chimney length has on a natural draft stove.

RidgeWood Stoves, defunct, support only / Recovery time

Just wondering what everyone's recovery times are like. Seems like it takes a bit for my fire to get going. If i open the door it takes right off but with just the damper open it seems a little slow to get going.

Plumbing / Questioning my pump
« on: October 01, 2014, 06:52:02 PM »
When i bought my stove I recieved a honeywell 3 speed 15gpm max pump which I installed. Now after doing some reading im wondering if it is up to the task or if I should be looking for am upgrade. I would say my total loop is about 200 feet of 1" pex.  Because of the construction of my house it enters into a crawlspace and at its highest point is about 6 feet higher than the stove. It then goes down into a michigan basement almost to the floor at the hot water heater which might be 3-4 feet lower than the stove.  i have 5 or 6 sweeping 90's  in the loop. After the dhw sidearm it goes to a 40 plate exchanger which is plumbed into m existing radiant heat system and back out to the stove. Never questioned it before, but knowing what I do know I am wondering if the honeywell is gonna have to work to hard.

Electronics / Using second thermostat to keep oil burner as backup
« on: August 25, 2014, 06:31:56 PM »
Hello everyone, great site, lots of info here. I will be hooking up a ridgewood owb soon. I currently have a fuel oil boiler with hot water heat with radiators. What I was hoping to try to do was have my current t-stat kick on the the pump for the loop in the house when it called for heat, but not the burner on the fuel oil furnace. Then have a second t-stat that would start the burner if the temp gets too low. Is that feasible? If not i may disable the burner on the fuel oil furnace and not run a back up and pray i dont have any issues. Thanks for any advice you may have/
