Plumbing / Pump Going Out??
« on: October 10, 2018, 07:24:02 AM »
Hey guys, I've been running a pair of chinese knockoff Grundfos pumps for now my 5th season.  I had one fail the first year, but it seized up and was obvious it was dead.  This one is starting to sound funny.  I can hear the water in the pump and it almost sounds like air bubbles in the pump.  It sounds turbulent and not smooth.  Is it about to die?  Should I replace it now?  I have a Taco ready to go.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Outside Pipe Reconstruct
« on: August 27, 2018, 05:30:00 AM »
Hey guys, I got my video up of me redoing my outside pipes.  With the new stove coming (it arrived Saturday and I'm going to pick it up TODAY) I figured I could do better with my outside pipes.  Obviously, they are a far cry from what should be done with buried pipes.  But, as you can see, I am 8' from my garage and there just isn't the justification for all the additional work what would go into getting buried lines into my garage.

HeatMaster / Moving on from my 10k
« on: July 11, 2018, 05:28:09 AM »
Well guys.  I'm moving on from my 10k.  I've been heating with it for the last 5 seasons.  I actually burned my first summer this summer for hot water.  We added 3 foster kids, for a total of 6 kids (5 boys) taking showers almost every night, so it was a no-brainer to keep burning.  I've been hem-hawing around for the last 2 years trying to sell my stove.  I've had a couple guys interested, but not bite.  I had my set price point that it wasn't worth moving on unless I got a certain price for it.  But, I finally have a buyer.

When I first bought my stove, gassers had just come on the market and they most had serious issues.  Creosote in the exchangers, controller issues, heavy maintenance requirements.  They just weren't that appealing to me at all.  I was set on a conventional stove and I've not regretted my decision.  At the time, I needed to be able to stuff her full and leave for a few days.  We all know my evaluation of everything lead me to the Heatmaster brand and I have been very satisfied.

But, gassers have come a long way in the last 5 years.  Creosote free exchangers, brush-less maintenance, dependable controllers and operation.  Plus, the most attractive feature for me, is a significant anticipated reduction in wood consumption.  I have averaged between 12 and 15 cords of wood each winter.  When I had 2 kids 5 years ago, it was a piece of cake to get that much wood cut up.  Now with 6, time is much more scarce.  Last season and looking forward to next, I was always behind.

Anyway, I have sold my 10k and will be taking shipment on a G200 in the next month.  I'll be documenting as much as I can on my youtube channel.  I'll keep you guys posted on here regarding progress and such.  I'll definitely be watching my wood consumption.  I am planning on starting it up as soon as I get it installed so I can get my water heaters turned back off again.

HeatMaster / Summer Burning
« on: May 01, 2018, 06:14:20 AM »
I'm starting my first summer burning in my 10k.  I just finished my 5th season of heating the house (finally.)  I'll be gaining 3 foster boys this summer making us a family of 8 and 6 of the 8 are boys.  Boys that will probably be taking a shower every night!!  I figured it was a good time to start burning over the summer and see how it goes.  My wife has been begging me to hook the pool up to an exchanger also.  I just don't want to spend the $500 on that project yet.

I've already started cutting up smaller stuff and splitting into much smaller pieces.  I figure it's easier for that stuff to coal up and re-light with the longer idle periods.  I've also dropped my set temps down with a tighter differential.  I'm probably going to make it tighter.  I've been running 170 top with an 8 degree swing.  I went out to a dead fire this morning.   :bash:

This is a good example of why I dump into my hot water tank after my heat exchanger.  Even though my fire is out, the stove is off, and the pump is off, I still have 40 gallons of somewhat hot water for dishes, washing hands, and maybe even a load of laundry.   I have upstairs plumbed immediately from the heat exchanger.  There will be no hot water upstairs until I get home tonight and get the fire going again.

General Outdoor Furnace Discussion / Instructional Videos
« on: January 26, 2016, 09:35:43 AM »
Guys, I just stumbled upon a new series of instructional videos that look great!  This guy really knows what he's talking about!  At least in the pool videos.  That's all I've watched so far.  Anyway, it looks like a new channel with not many views, but I'm sure they'll take off.  Full disclaimer, this is a supplier.  But, just like most of the dealers and suppliers on here, he's got these videos up there for all of us.

HeatMaster / In-Depth Review
« on: May 15, 2015, 05:18:58 AM »
Hey folks!  Sorry if you're getting tired of my voice!  Last year when I posted the video of my setup, I got some feedback that I didn't talk about the stove.  So, here is my actual review of the stove itself.  I doubt I covered everything, but here you go.

HeatMaster / Heatmaster Cleanout Procedure
« on: May 04, 2015, 06:37:47 AM »
Hey guys.  I got another video made for my cleanout procedure.  The one thing I didn't mention was your water.  Leave the water alone.  The Heatmaster manual says to bring your stove up to temp and let it run for up to 48 hours before collecting your sample.  So, I wait until startup to top off my water.  If you add water at shutodwn, you have to send in a sample.  You can apply these practices to any stove. There are, however, several items specifically for Heatmaster stoves.

HeatMaster / What a night!
« on: November 07, 2014, 05:32:17 AM »
Well, I had an eventful night last night.  Went out to check the hot tub chemicals and heard a terrible sound coming from my pumps!  Flipped them off and checked the stove.....boil over.  Still steaming and smoking.  Got my tools and took the fan off the back to find the damper flap stuck open about 1/8" from a piece of debris.  Got it sucked out with the shop vac and put back together and put water back in.  Elapsed time: 1.5 hours.  Temp came down......and kept going down!  Fan wouldn't come on.  Got my phillips screwdriver and my hot wire detector and took off all the covers and checked all my power.  After an hour of checking I found a little disc behind my thermostat that power was entering but not exiting!  Looked up the wiring diagram in my manual.......high limit switch!  Then the stories I read on here came flashing back in my head about Yoder telling others about that switch.  I put everything back together and went to bed.  Got up at 1:30 to check on things and everything was back to normal.  Glad it wasn't sub-freezing out there last night!!

The good out of this, I am now intimately familiar with my electrical components on this stove.  It is much simpler than I thought!  I also, immediately upon returning to the house, ordered a BBQ meat alarm that everyone has been raving about.

Fire Wood / Tragedy
« on: July 22, 2014, 11:13:31 AM »
Guys, wear your PPE and don't do more than you can handle.  Southern Indiana was dealt a big blow this week when a local Christian Church Camp director was killed in a tree cutting accident.  I'll be ordering a hard hat and chaps before I do any more cutting.  We've got a dangerous job heating our homes with wood.  One small slip and it's over.  We should do our part for our families and our children and take the time and effort to put on the PPE and take our time.  One log or great looking tree isn't worth our lives.

Stay safe guys.
